More like, SAL Parcel, actually. It's like SAL, but it's tracked and requires signature upon receiving the goods (and around 1000yen more expensive, too)

You'll get bumped to SAL Parcel if your items are worth over $100 in one box, and there's a certain limit to the box size for SAL Small Pack (the cheaper, uninsured shipping), so you won't get SAL-SP if you have a bunch of stuff packed and ready to ship.

You can ask for some items to be canceled, to reduce the total charge, though there's a high chance they'll still use SAL Parcel for your package (even though the total is less than $100, like what happened to me in the above. I had another item in the order before this, which totals to $140 including shipping), but you can ask for them to make it SAL-SP.

The model kit must've had a HUGE box, I suppose. And shipping's rather cheap for EMS.

just recently after knowing franstormer, its easier to find some pvc figure at local shop. i think the best way to avoid custom tax are by ordering from shop coz it safer and cheaper (I think). Nah, my babling is getting worst.

Every EMS box should have a sticker with the postage cost and weight slapped to it (it includes items cost too, with HLJ). Postman will total them together to tax you..

Do you mean SAL shipping has no shipping price on the box?... B.T.W.  sal shipping will be only 1380 yen (not 1680 yen) ... bringing it to slightly below RM500

The rules states (Custom Duties Exemption Order 1988, Perkara: 172, and Sales Tax (Exemption ) Order 1980 , Pekara: 109) not exceed RM 500 in CIF value... CIF.. Cost, Insurance and Freight.. Even if the item is free and the shipping cost you RM500.01, you will be taxed.
