DOHC VTEC...
If DOHC word bigger than VTEC, it is so called "Small VTEC"
If VTEC word bigger than DOHC, than it is "Big VTEC"...
But then there is still some other way to determine as well...

DOHC - K Series, B Series, H Series etc
SOHC - L Series, R Series, D Series etc

H engine is all Big VTEC?
What is their engine code?
How to check the engine condition?

eg8 use B series and B is injection

Is this a Big VTEC or small VTEC?

Big and small vtec is usually reserved for the b16a series engine...but this is definitely not B-series

Engine condition difficult to tell from exterior...ask the boss to start the halfcut b4 buying

the halfcut itself, which at bear minimum should include the engine itself w/ gearbox, wiring harness, ECU..
anything else like rads, front knuckle and brake disk, steering rack etc are bonus and may increase the halfcut price.
but remember the important thing, the ECU

The ECU is the computer unit that controls the engine with all the sensors feedback.
For civic EG, it should be on the passenger side legroom near the wall (the silver aluminium box under the carpet.

Your old engine may have ECU by itself, but it may have different engine mappings/program in it that only suit your old engine. each engine is paired together with their own ECU/control unit to work properly.

p/s: i drive an EG too

if speedo not working, maybe its bcoz
1. speedo really kong
2. the connector in the engine bay loose/bad connection due to dirt.

From the picture.. It looks like a SOHC VTEC...
And Small/Big mostly applies to the B16 era... Where they release and improve overtime...

It's a D-Series engine.. D15 or D16 ... engine condition have to check urself... the outside looks clean but the internals might be bad ...

Both are equally good for me... But MUGEN costs a lot more if not wrong...

bro.. where is the sensor for speedo located in stock eg8.. my eg8 spedo didnt work.. hmm.. other work great.. oni speedo..

from the pic, looks like D series, sohc vtec. it's either 1.5 or 1.6
this series is more concern with FC. hehe.

Just some info to share with you, b16 from an eg halfcut is surely big v, well there is some way to identify it if you are not sure...

looks like big vtec? no it's not, it's just the last model that uses big vtec valve cover...
look at item no.1, the manifold intake, for big vtec it doesnt have the PGM-FI sticker
item no.2, the valve cover, FYI all EF b16 are small vtec..dont be deceived by the VTEC word bigger than DOHC word.
item no.3, the distributor, big vtec distributor are bigger in size.
item no.4, the vtec solenoid, small vtec solenoid are fatter in size while the big vtec solenoid are slimmer.
