I have a ST31000340AS with SD15 firmware too, just bought from PC Fair (III) 2008. Still working fine one month down the road, but I'm pretty spooked now.
I've heard there is a firmware patch for this drive, but does it it work? Apparently we need to contact Seagate Tech Support directly to get it. Anyone willing to try it out?

Is the 7200.12 series already selling in Malaysia? Heard that one got no problems. Perhaps should upgrade to that while my drive still works.

According to the data, it doesn't matter if it's China or Thailand, any drive with the SD15 firmware can fail, although it's a higher rate of Thailand-made drives for now.

Actually you can also download Seagate's drive diagnostic utility, Seatools which will show all the data you need w/o needing to open the casing. You can get it here: http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/seatools/

People need to stop being too paranoid. So far only proven that drives with the SD15 firmware has this problem. If you're using a ST31000333AS, then it's okay. You can actually see this in the list of failed drives they're collecting in the MSFN forums here http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=128514

DON'T APPLY THE AD14 FIRMWARE! It's a for a different model and version.
It's actually a fix for the SD14 firmware, which had a performance issue bug. It's not for the SD15 drives.
BTW, it seems Seagate will do an official announcement on the 21st, so let's keep our fingers crossed.

Hmm, if Seagate tech support say can, then maybe can? I read on the MSFN forum thread that there might be chance of bricking the drive if you use the AD14/SD14 firmware, since it's actually "downgrading". Regarding the announcement, it's also sourced from German news site + reports of people from Seagate tech support.

QUOTE(poolcarpet @ Jan 17 2009, 07:44 AM) Hi all, Please do not simply update your firmware. Latest news now is that Seagate has finally acknowledged this problem and they will be releasing a firmware soon. http://seagate.custkb.com/seagate/crm/self...sp?DocId=207931Also, a statement from their spokesman: http://techreport.com/discussions.x/16246So those with this drive that is still running, hang in there make sure you have backups before you shutdown each time. Those with this brick-ed drive and need to get the data back, wait for the news on free recovery. YES! Good to see Seagate's acknowledging the issue finally, and even offering free data recovery services to all uses with bricked drives. Let's hope they don't screw this up even more. Already contacted Seagate tech support Malaysia about the issue, I hope to hear something good back from them.
