does the firmware update erases all data on the drive? i have some pretty important stuff on it, afraid to risk losing everything on it
Nope, I had updated the firmware and all my data are intact.

QUOTE(dlwl @ Jul 25 2010, 08:09 PM) i updated the firmware already, but still the drive is giving me problems. i can access the drive, but when i want to copy out my data, it just hangs..i can see from the LED indicator that it keeps on reading only, but no response at all. any hope on saving it? Go to Seagate to download Sea Tool. It can can be used not only for checking your hard disk but also repairing it. |

Not detect never mind. Burn the SeaTool to a CD and then boot up your pc using that CD.
Then u can go for Long DST check and will be prompted for repairing after some time. Yes, it will really take some times!!! |
