QUOTE(Matrix @ Jan 18 2009, 08:48 PM) nOOOO!!!! I've just bought a 640GB WD HDD today for my BT machine... btw, how to update the firmware for the seagate 500GB HDD?? The link provided up there has the batch file and all, but i've three drives in my PC....how does it know which to flash? Furthermore, is is safe to do? I'm afraid if i do it, it kills it immediately even faster than let it die naturally .. Now now... don't jump to conclusions based on an isolated case. It's not even widespread like these dying seagates. I have 2 units of 640GB WD, both are working fine so far. One is about a year old and the other is like 2,3 months behind, IIRC.

QUOTE(Xrossfire @ Mar 13 2009, 11:21 AM) Argh...we got different firmwares, cant really compare directly, isn't? My guess is, I have an older firmware SN04, is that right? When did you bought those drives, wKkaY? I'm using ST31000340NS as well. Two of them (SN04) were affected by this firmware issue, another 2 are still working fine (SN05).

QUOTE(don_naza @ Mar 30 2009, 10:25 PM) lots of people out there still don't know about this particular HDD issue. they keep on buying the shitgate due to cheap prices. we should do something to help them not to step into this problem. I actually suggested (via the Feedbacks section) this news to be posted on the front page of LYN. The admin asked me to forward it to this particular email address, but I forgot to do it.

QUOTE(Sib @ Apr 27 2009, 10:07 PM) i've got 2 500GB effected Barracudas, 1 RMA n i've updated to SD1A firmware. the other i oso update. but there's a hitch, the RMAed one even tho they gave me the same effected unit but after updated firmware, works flawlessly till now. on the other hand the one sometimes cannot detect. i have to reconnect the SATA cables then can properly boot. i've run Seatools n pass both S.M.A.R.T n Short drive self test n both HDD pass. can the effected HDD be RMAed? i mean can detect still but the prob is quite annoying n i'm afraid tat it'll soon kaput. opinions guys? It's worth giving a try. Describe the problem in an email or something before sending it for RMA.

My ST31000340NS just died (SN05 firmware). It was running on RAID0 (x3) on a Mac Pro. The other 2 disks of the same model survived but as expected there are no survivors when it comes to data.
Now I have to re-edit some videos from scratch as I don't have a full backup.
Damn it.

QUOTE(Prodigenous Zee @ May 30 2009, 08:27 PM) Stupid question.. but if I flash my already affected hdd, I still lose the data? Not sure about other cases but my 'already affected' hdd cannot even be flashed. In fact it would stop the system from booting properly.

Sure go ahead. BTW, IINM you're also using ST31000340NS right? If yes, are they working fine?
I've successfully flashed my other 2 disks with SN06 but I'm using them only as an ornament for now.

QUOTE(blacksheepwall @ Sep 5 2010, 07:54 PM) I was aiming for 7200.12 before I read this.... phew... (-/_-)X(- _ -)X(-_\-) read through a few post... very few? (relative to 11 version) cases related to 7200.12.... What's make me step away from 7200.12 is its 3 years warranty period instead of their normal 5 years. Does that mean that they know there is something not right about this platform? I don't want to get into "fix thing" trouble and I also don't want the drive to die suddenly right after 3 years. Too bad.... this "was" a good choice for me. nice speed, good price. Okay.... Anyone got some good suggestions for 500 GB drive. mainly gaming & "download/upload" purpose..... \(X0X)/ FYI, Seagate reduced the warranty after this firmware fiasco.
