-Hmm, seems like a massive & widespread problem; refer here:

1. http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=128092

2. http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=128514

-BTW, the 1TB Seagate HDDs AllnGap is selling (ST31000340xx) here are affected by this or not?

i just got the ST31000340NS from allngp..... with 2 months warranty only samore. mine is sd15 fw....

shit... scary... cant put valuable data there then... how now?
*
-Err, I just RMA'ed my ST31000340AS which bought from him in mid-December 2008.
Symptom(s): failed to do full-format (quick format OK), when trying to re-partition(s), Disk Management couldn't detect the disk anymore (but could be detected in Device Manager).

-I asked for a refund, but he mistakenly sent another replacement. rclxub.gif
Now wondering whether want to use or return back (still sealed in the static back)... sweat.gif

Regards.

Well if your HDD is still running and you don't want to physically take it out to check the codes (still the easiest way), you can see the model number in the device manager under disk drives.

Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager > Disk Drives

Failing which SeaTools for DOS from Seagate can provide the same information.

What you're looking for should be something like ST3xx003x0AS.

However, what you will not get is the firmware version which is all important because it seems to affect mostly version SD15 drives.

I recommend take the time, open up the casing (5 mins downtime max and a screwdriver is all you need) and check the codes.

QUOTE(kurogane @ Jan 15 2009, 08:48 AM)
Actually you can also download Seagate's drive diagnostic utility, Seatools which will show all the data you need w/o needing to open the casing.

You can get it here: http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/seatools/
*
-Hmm, he wants to know where his HDD was made (i.e. China or Thailand).
Could any software tell that?

Oh farkkk.. I'm using a Seagate 320GB ST3320620AS as my system hdd + personal data hdd...

Man owhh man, i should have kept my WD 320GB for myself instead of giving it to my sis.. Haihhhhh.. sad.gif
*
-Err, as far as I know, there're only mentions on 500GB and 1TB drives, but none on others (correct me if I'm wrong).

Well, my 500gb just died a week back or so. 6 months old. Rapidshare and prawn stuff did most of the damage I bet. biggrin.gif ST3500320AS.. Glad it wasn't my PC's fault then. But because of my clever brain, I cabut all the wires, took everything out, and then put them back in, insert all the wires, but the PC can't start anymore. laugh.gif I miss my porns! sad.gif

Got back from work, turn on the pc.. HD gone. Kesian my bro had to be interrogated by me. laugh.gif

mad.gif  vmad.gif
I'll stay away from Seagate after this. WD, here I come.. on hold till next month for my paycheck. sad.gif

-Hmm, good for you. Porn collection isn't something to boast about. shakehead.gif

guys...
i got a 1tb OEM seagate dat i bought from AllnGap last month... it can't do full format n last time i used quick format... the harddisk still working in windows xp.. recently i installed osx86 in my pc.. and the hard-disk cannot mount... how ar?? is it faulty or what??
*
-Hmm, exactly the SAME issue as me (bought from him also).
Can do quick format, but full format cannot. When attempt to do it, just hang at 0%.

-Then I tried to delete all partitions (to repartition all over again), but suddenly Disk Management cannot detect anymore (still shown in Device Manager). Just send back to him and asked for a refund, instead he give another one (replacement). Now going to return this also.

@spanker,

-Could you edit the topic description so it would states ST3*340AS also (this series is the mostly affected), since you're the thread starter (TS)?

-Or, maybe you can just put "Seagate 500GB/750GB/1TB 7200.11 drives" only.

Does this apply to OEM drives??
*
QUOTE(ruffstuff @ Jan 17 2009, 10:32 AM)
no manufacturers warranty as far as I'm concerned for OEMs drives.
*
-Err, then how about OEM drives bought from AllnGap?
Here's my HDD details (the RMA'ed/replacement one):

ST31000340AS
S/N: xxxxxxxx
P/N: 9BX158-568
Firmware: SD35
Date code: 08251
Site code: WUXISG (Made in China)

-Any other buyer(s) had RMA/returned HDDs to him?
Please state here so we know whether those drives affected too (or not).

your hdd is listed.  It's all between you and allngap. I don't think it will involved seagate.
*
-What I meant is, can we obtain the firmware update directly from Seagate?
I already submit a case, though.

-BTW, my drive have SD35 firmware, don't know whether is affected or not.
But, have returned once (failed to detect after trying to full formatting). rclxub.gif

-Hmm, the SD1A firmware could be used on all 7200.11 series or have different set for (each) different size(s)?

-Any SD1A binary for ST31000340AS (1TB)? Please share!

No, mine is AD14.  The reason i don't wanna post is because there could be different firmware for different batches. Don't simply pandai-pandai and flash everything to latest urself lar. I dun wanna post my firmware here and later screw up everyone's hard disks, then blame SeaGate.

Just give em a call, forgot the e-mail to the support posted up there. What's so difficult? Just spend 5 minutes on the line and kaw-tim already. Tell them ur serial no and they'll give u the correct firmware. Don't be lazy! doh.gif
*
-I already created a support case at Seagate and escalated it 2 days ago (Friday).
No reply yet!

-BTW, can we use the SD1A firmware from Newegg (for 1.5TB ST31500341AS) for the 1TB drive (ST31000340AS)?

I would suggest to wait for Seagate for official news. Don't try to pandai-pandai sendiri, may end up with a permanently bricked hard disk!!

Just use the online serial number checker to see if yours is affected, if yes, then send a mail to discsupport and wait. Serial numbers need to be in CAPS.
*
-Err, I already submitted a case on Saturday (2 days ago). sweat.gif

-BTW, about the S/N Checker, refer here: http://forums.seagate.com/stx/board/messag...&thread.id=5005
It isn't reliable.

the initial post of http://seagate.custkb.com/seagate/crm/self...sp?DocId=207951 update the firmware to SD1A but only works for part number end with -300

later the version updated on Jan 19, 2008 4:15PM CST is able to update those part number end with -303 (probably some others as well), but was reported to bricked 500G model (refer http://forums.seagate.com/stx/board/messag...thread.id=5625)

the page is being updated again on Jan 19, 2008 8PM CST (should be 10am our time) and now the updater is taken offline for validation..

and note that the year stated on the page, it's still 2008?!? guess it's a chaos over there at their support department happy.gif||
*
-Err, I hope the time & date system only break on their website, not their development/test system.
If not, maybe our drive could be 'gelong' already... sweat.gif
Y2K8 anyone? biggrin.gif
