Kampung Buku Malaysia in Langkawi is the first and only village in South-east Asia"

Kampung Buku Malaysia (Malaysia Book Village) in Langkawi is the first and only book village in South-east Asia which is part of the International Book Villages and Book Towns Movement which, thus far, have about 12 registered booktowns, mostly in Europe. Most Book Towns have developed in villages of historic interest or of scenic beauty - traits that fit Langkawi island's Book Village location.

Situated amidst a lush green forest at the foot of Gunung Raya, the highest peak of the island, Kampung Buku Malaysia provides visitors, particularly book lovers, a tranquil setting in which to indulge in their hobby.

There are seven houses in Book Village, which are stocked with a great variety of new books covering numerous topics and languages. There is also quite a few second hand, rare and antiquarian books to be found here.

Kampung Buku Malaysia is open daily from 9am through 6pm and admission is free. For more information please contact Kampung Buku Malaysia at +604-9555568 or the Langkawi Tourist Information Centre at +604-9667789.

Readings from Echoes of Silence: http://www.silverfishbooks.com/2009/04/rea...of-silence.html
Date: 23rd May 2009
QUOTE
In a session called Anatomizing the colonised mind: reading and discussion of Echoes of Silence, the author, Chuah Guat Eng, will read from her novel on Saturday, 23 May at Silverfish Books, 58-1 Jalan Telawi, Bangsar Baru, 59100 Kuala Lumpur (Tel: 228 448 37) at 5.00pm.

Echoes of Silence is the first full-length novel in English by a Malaysian woman. Critically acclaimed when it first appeared in 1994, it has been enjoyed by general readers, and studied by students and scholars of postcolonial literature in Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong and Australia.

Echoes is a multi-faceted novel, which can be enjoyed at several levels. Although it is written in the first person, the novel is not autobiographical. And although there is a murder and murder investigation, it is not simply a detective thriller. For the reading Chuah will focus on excerpts illustrating the novel's exploration of the colonised mind. "In March 1970, as a direct result of the May 1969 racial riots, I left Malaysia." -- So begins the story of Lim Ai Lian, a Chinese Malaysian.

Besides Echoes of Silence, Chuah's other published literary works are Tales from the Baram River (2001), a collection of Sarawak folktales retold for children, and The Old House and Other Stories (2008), a collection of short stories written and published in various publications and anthologies between 1992 and 2002. She works part-time as a corporate communications consultant and occasionally runs lecture courses at universities.

Admission is free but seats will be on first-come-first-served basis.

Journey back to the '70s for Lat fans

user posted image

KUALA LUMPUR: Fans of Malaysian cartoonist Lat can now enjoy a compilation of his early works in a book.
The 206-page hardcover book, entitled Lat -- The Early Series, contains drawings by Lat, or Datuk Mohamed Nor Khalid, beginning from when he started his Scenes of Malaysian Life series in 1974 in the New Straits Times.

"There are also pictures and memorabilia that I have collected throughout my journey as a cartoonist in the book that I think my fans would enjoy," said Lat at the book launch in Balai Berita yesterday.

"Fans who bought my books in the early 70s but have lost them or have given them away can now enjoy them again."

Lat said that having his early works restored was a great honour.

NSTP E-media Sdn Bhd general manager Zainul Ariffin said the book was not only an attempt to put together some of Lat's memorable work, but also to highlight his evolution as an artist.

Also present at the launch were New Straits Times Press (M) Bhd chief executive officer Datuk Anthony Bujang and Berita Harian group editor Datuk Manja Ismail.

Published by the NSTP Resource Centre, the book is available at major bookstores and online (www.nst.com.my) at RM120 per copy.
