Quality and Pricing
Apple's prices for RAM and hard drives are outrageously high. Remember, Apple loves profit, not you. Whenever you can buy your Mac with the stock RAM, and upgrade later with third party RAM from a reputable supplier. Apple buys Samsung, Hynix and Micron RAM modules in bulk, just like good third party brands do, there is nothing special about Apple branded memory..

When buying memory, it is generally not advisable to go with the absolute cheapest stuff you can find. Many Mac models have a reputation for being very picky about the quality of RAM they will work with. Low quality memory can and often will cause application crashes, total machine crashes, and data corruption. Do your homework on quality reputation up front, and be advised that while buying generic memory saves you money, you assume a greater risk of trouble later on.

You may also have issues if you use High Density RAM in your Mac (this is the most common form of RAM that can be purchased from eBay). You may find it simply doesn't work with your Mac, the computer only accepts half the amount or it runs much slower. RAM bought from a recommended supplier will not be high density and will work correctly.

It is not recommended to buy RAM faster than your machine will handle. It won't make the machine run any faster (the Mac sets the memory bus speed, not the RAM module), and there may be compatibility issues with the RAM clocking down to the Mac's bus speed. 800 MHz SODIMMs are widely reported to be incompatible with Penryn Core2Duo Macs, which require 667 MHz memory.

Added on March 2, 2009, 8:45 pmbasically, there's nothing special about apple certified ram...

mac rumors recommend crucial, but this ram is expensive...

Probably the CAS latency makes a difference, but KVR or Mushkin is good enough,im using both on my merom MB 2GBKVR and 1GBMushkin = 3GB

hmmm basically what RAM does the new macbook pros originally use? everyone here seems unsure of what kind of RAM they should purchase..
*
its an oem ram cant be purchased anywhere else, its called Hynix aka Hyundai corporation Korea. You can find OWC or crucial ram,but its a bit more pricey but with shipping its under RM300, i dont recommend KVR cause it seems the quality is dropping these days, can also use KTA but there are expensive too. Mushkin is not bad too,but who sell these? last time saw was one of the shops in Lowyat.

QUOTE(jind86 @ Jun 26 2009, 08:28 PM)
so basically the only way i can get the OEM RAM is by purchasing (upgrading) from the apple store?

And you mentioned "Mushkin is not bad too", how exactly do you judge that?
*
That is true, but crucial has the same specs as the apple oem memory they use the same chips which is micron, can only get it in ebay tho.

i wouldnt be recommending them if i never tried em would i? They have the EB series which is meant for mac, the CL is about 5 if not mistaken,no trouble or issue after almost a year and a half of usage on my MB white.

Im using 2X2 Crucial RAM from Machines. Got it cheaper while there was a sale in Mac Discovery Week in JB. I think around RM400++

May I ask why is it better than most Kingston Value Ram??
*
well cause of its nature of being very similar to the oem rams using the basic chips that hynix use, which is micron, those black square thing on the rams!

i see smile.gif

the installation is very2 easy....not more that 5 minute i guess....
now, my MBP run faster  rclxm9.gif
*
wait did you disconnect the battery ribbon before installing? cause if the battery is connected to the logicboard you might fry it by replacing the ram, since your MBP is fine i think its alright but to others dont take a gamble. Even replacing the HDD also the same step remove that pin there gently. and always remember to wear an anti static wristband,to avoid danger to the logicboard. can get from ACE hardware,3-4 bucks only.

i'm going to buy Crucial RAM for my brother lappie
http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.asp...%29%20MB470LL/A

wanna ask, anyone think this higher price ram got any different compare to Kingston VR?
cuz it just said "Guaranteed-compatible memory upgrades for your Apple MacBook Pro 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (15-inch DDR3) MB470LL/A Laptop/Notebook."
not Apple Certified RAM
*
well the crucial rams are the closest to the Apple OEM rams, thats why they can guarantee maximum compatibility. you can actually get it way cheaper through ebay and the shipping is free too, http://cgi.ebay.com.my/CRUCIAL-4GB-2X2GB-D...p3286.m63.l1177

hey.
if i wanna upgrade my mbw's ram to 4gb but with higher speed, is that possible?
or need to stick with the current ram speed?
*
theres a memory controller that will downgrade the speed back to 667 or 800 depending on which MBW you have.

then say u bought a 1066 Mhz RAM, ur memory controller will downgrade it to 800 Mhz. so technically it is compatible..but if u just went for a 800Mhz RAM can save a bit i think ;p
*
thats DDR3 cant use it interchangeably with DDR2. Just get the DDR2 800MHz.

hi all mac experts here, although i am quite new in LYN but i had read and surveyed a lot of other forums. i dun think macbook white(even the latest with nvidia geforce9400m) supports DDR3. correct me if i m wrong...
*
you dont have to join a forum to ask that, its already been established that the current MB white is on ddr2 800MHz. Check the apple website, its there for a reason doh.gif

i wanted to, but ordering from their website is too expensive. no more bulk?
*
i remember i posted an ebay link here last time, btw even as a reseller i find it tough to bring in the rams cause shipping is high plus the tax sheesh.

http://cgi.ebay.com.my/NEW-Crucial-4GB-2X2...22#ht_561wt_909

do contact the seller regarding postage details, it should otherwise be free.
