Mafia II is an upcoming 2009 sandbox-style third-person shooter video game which is the sequel to Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven. It is being developed by 2K Czech, previously known as Illusion Softworks, and will be published by 2K Games. Development of Mafia 2 was announced on August 21, 2007 at the Leipzig Games Convention. The game will be set in the 1940s and '50s in Empire City, a fictional city based on San Francisco and New York City. The name is a reference to New York's state nickname "The Empire State". Mafia 2 will be available for Playstation 3, Xbox 360 and Microsoft Windows. It is set to be released in the second half 2009

Gameplay

The player can read newspapers to learn about recent news between 1945 and the early 1950s. The game features a completely open-ended map of 10 square miles, including surrounding countryside. No restrictions are included from the start of the game.Based on models of the time, and changing with the era, cars will play a central role. Laws, including traffic laws, must be obeyed, but the police interaction will be toned down compared to the original Mafia game. Unlike its predecessor - in which the player had to be taught how to steal certain cars before they are drivable - every car can be driven from the beginning of the game. The fictional Empire city is based on both New York City and San Francisco, hinting that the tram service from the original Mafia game will make a return. The city will also feature sights such as the Brooklyn Bridge and the Empire State Building.

The player can get "very high" in the city, adding a possible vertical element. The player will be able to buy safehouses where they can store gear and use as a home. Restaurants will be accessible to buy food like hamburgers and sandwiches and drinks such as coffee to restore lost health.Upgrades can be performed on cars at the "Empire Automobile Shop". Engines can be replaced; cars can be resprayed; the license plates can be changed and interiors can be refitted, to name a few. Things such as sink faucets/taps, switches, bottles, and chairs will all be interactive, as well as radios that the player can turn on to hear a few licensed period tunes.Gyms will be featured, so the player can learn new combos and fighting styles. As seen in screenshots, Vito will be able to hail taxi cabs and they will take him wherever he wants.Car trunks can be opened, and weapons and bodies may be stashed there. Car hoods can also be opened to tamper with the vehicle by doing things like disabling brakes etc.The player will have their own car, the registration plate of which can be customised.Vito can go into clothing stores and purchase different outfits.Motorcycle are included in the game.

Synopsis

The storyline for Mafia 2 is a gritty drama and chronicles the rise of Vito Scaletta, the son of Sicilian immigrants. As the game progresses, Vito will join a crime family and become "a made man." The game will include multiple situations where the player can decide the outcome and their choice will lead to one of several different endings.
The story begins with the player character Vito returning home from World War II. Vito had joined the U.S. military as a way of avoiding jail time for a botched robbery. Vito reunites with his old friend, Joe Barbaro, and the two quickly embark upon a life of crime. Their criminal ascension starts with Mikey, a car mechanic who gets in a conflict with Joe. Mikey also needs a certain type of car to chop for parts, and will pay $400 for one that the police are not tailing. Soon enough, Vito, Joe, and Henry Tomasino (already a made man) find themselves battling with, for, against, and around three crime factions: the Falconi, Vinci and Clemente families.
The game will contain two hours of in-game cutscenes. The original game, Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven, had a screenplay of 400 pages, opposed to the 700 pages of the sequel. Daniel Vavra, the writer and director of the original and the sequel, discussed the new angle of the game stating: "The old game was a tribute to gangster movies, a romantic vision. Mafia 2 is grittier, real, a darker world, and the effects are based in reality." The Official Playstation Magazine states: "A high body count is still promised in this tale set in a fictional city 'inspired by' New York of the 1940s and '50s, but those casualties will come the hard way -- through small-scale operations rather than mass firefights."

Looks good. '50s style GTA.

I still have awful memories of the first Mafia's car race on a PC with keyboard and no difficulty settings -.-

storyline is awesome, driving is ok. but i feel like there is no other side mission to do when you are not in a mission, im on chapter 9 right now.

best thing to do is steal cars, get to chop shop and crushed it. lots of moo, easy money...

finally completed that mission, what i did was :

Took the car outside of the warehouse, Park it right below the warehouse gate, it closes halfway and got jammed, then it reopens and wala, just stay behind the wall, kill 1 by 1, run at the back, kill the other 2 jerk off, go up collect your big pay check..

lol
