Gamasutra reports that troubled publisher Ziff Davis has sold the 1UP Network and shut down EGM magazine:

" Following repeated rumors to the effect, Gamasutra has learned that Ziff Davis has sold its 1UP division to Hearst's UGO Entertainment, and is shutting long-running print magazine EGM in the process.

According to a statement received by Gamasutra, Ziff Davis Media has now officially announced the sale of the 1UP Digital Network to Hearst's UGO Entertainment division.

The sale includes 1UP.com, Mycheats.com, Gametab.com, and GameVideos.com, and specific financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

In association with this, Ziff Davis Media's EGM Magazine, a consumer game print mainstay since 1989, will be discontinued. The January 2009 issue will be the final printed issue.

Thirty staffers have so been let go, so far."

i havemany of their issues...in fact in the last 5 years i have biufght most if not all their issues...

before that i was only a small kid and had no respect for magazines...EGM brought that love and respect...

The last issue if anyone wants to know...is with that crappy cover of in game wolverine...it would have been ironic if their last issue was the watchmen cover...you will see why tongue.gif

Their last issue was blurry becoz UGO does not want it and the guys from EGM does not have the funds to print it properly, thats why its blurry..

Eventhough EGM has some bad patches, i still bought their mags coz i love their quirky stuff there. They have their own identity writing reviews, previews and also seanbaby, haha! And they dun give a damn about gaming companies who just want rave reviews from them..(Ubisoft)

The RPG issue was a great issue, tons of wonderful RPG's that were gonna be released that time, esp N64's Ocarina of Time. To get the thickness of the old EGM's, you need to stack up 3 new EGM's together, haha.

I think the best issue was the one with Solid Snake in the cover, the uncovering of MGS2. It was hand drawn by Yoji Shinkawa..

Personally I think they were good, before the unveiling of Xbox. then they went haywire, I understand it and them being American and all.

I hope somebody will bring it back to life, but this time, none of that modern art crap, and make it thicker (not by ads please, )just like the old skool version.

Come to think of it, I miss Expert Gamer too..

such a great issue and then tiba-tiba this happens, just when i'm starting to get into the magazine. rclxub.gif

I think because they were own Ziff Davis, and we all know Ziff DAvis does not have a lot of money to cover everything in its 1up network, so i think that's why EGM is getting thinner every issue, cut cost.

Well...It's was a really really great run...All those SNES and Genesis eras..then PS1 then PS2..then now...

p/s: Still waiting them to refund my yearly subscription which have 5 more months I think...

But...

I still have Rebel FM, Geekbox, Area5.tv and sorethumb to keep me company even when EGM and 1up is gone (yup 1up is still around but it's not going to be the same)...They are the best...
