Added on January 18, 2009, 1:24 pmAny suggestions on how am I to fix it, without the metal hs touching the ram chips?

My rams are oced, and at 1.95v. Since I have a couple of old P2 and P3 pcs that I do not use anymore, I`ve decided to make a ram cooler frm it. What do u think?

There is no easy way out, for a heatsink to work, it MUST have good contact with the object being cooled (in this case, ram chips). Otherwise, put the fan blowing on the chips, and forget about the heatsink.

I tried and it fits well on my rams, temps are absorbed by the heat sink

i think the heatsink doesnt serve any purpose
imo just the 80mm will do the job |

I have 2 more 8cm fans... Is the cooler better off without the hs? Cause frm what I know, the heat is absorbed by the hs and teh fan cools teh hs?

Ram actually doesn't put out much heat, so even 1 medium 60mm fan and no heatsink/heatspreader is usually more than enough. But up to you really, the heatsink will improve things if it contacts the ram chips properly. Most heatspreaders actually don't work because of lousy thermal contact using poor quality thermal tape. Most of the time heatspreaders just end up being cosmetic improvements, plus a bit of protection from physical damage.

Don't confuse heat & temperature. Ram even at massively overclocked speeds hardly puts out 15-20W of heat, which is nothing when you consider its spread out over a fairly large surface (8-16 chips/stick, multipled by number of sticks). Each chip is putting out maybe 1W at most.
The problem is that the ram area is poorly ventilated in most systems (first ram stick blocks air from CPU fan, no other fans nearby), so with nowhere for the heat to go, temperatures rise even though there's actually very little heat. That's why even a single medium speed fan can effortlessly keep ram cool. |
