I am going to start my first year in UNSW.

& regarding the orientation week, what are we suppose to do during that whole week?

Is the lecture going to start on that particular week?

Is the attendance going to be marked? Is the orientation programme thumbup.gif  really COMPULSORY?

Hi Kwang Hui,

There are many events in the O-week and week 0.
you can join ISS events, your sch events, society etc.
I am CSE student, I have get a time table for the O-week and week 0 from Computer Science and Engineering sch.
there are many kind of event, depend on which 1 you wan to go.
I will go to do my student ID in O-week/week 0 as well.
Normally, O-week and week 0 is ntg to do. It just for you to do your personal things and get so introduction speech.
For me, I will go to apply student ID, open bank acc, and join some of welcome events/introduction etc.
usually, lecture and classes going to start on week 1.
Finally, I get an offer accommodation from New College Village.

Well orientation week (we call it O-Week) here is sorta like a funfair, there will be stalls by most of the clubs/student organizations as well as other external parties like SMH, Sydney Buses, Banks etc. There is also the Yellow Shirt volunteers giving out flyers, helping out as well as conducting campus tours, it is not a bad idea to take part in one of those campus tours to familiarize yourself with the buildings' names on campus.

Regarding the lectures, no, there isn't any lecture during O-Week.

If you are talking about attendance for orientation, then no, attendance is not compulsory. Heck even attendance for lectures is not compulsory. But as a first year student, I do strongly suggest that you spend at least a day or two to attend the orientation programs, make sure you grab a campus map as well. Trust me, it helps a lot having a map in hand during the first few weeks.

Hope this helps.

Monash recently sent me an invoice for the school fees together with OSHC monay. I've paid it.

Now, I'm trying to enrol online, but I do not know my OSHC number/start date and end date. I only know the OSHC provider. Anyone know where I can check? Thanks smile.gif

I don't have my OHSC policy number :S

I guess I just can't enrol online until I attend the orientation. Even though I'm a year 2 continuing student. Darn.

Some courses may have classes at Week 0, that you will have to check with your school, perhaps my.unsw or vista. But generally speaking, most of them only start in Week 1.

The interesting part about rate cuts is that it generally causes the exchange rate to fall, not rise. This is due to the fact that the dollar becomes less 'enticing' as it was when interest rates were higher, this was reflected quite well over the past few months which is why I am wondering why its rising AFTER a rate cut

Exchanging cash really mafan man.

There are soooo little money changers in my hometown. I can only find like 2. And 1 of them is Tesco, but the rates are hyper crazy. $1 = RM2.49

I traded in Penang airport at 2.435 in the end. I bet in kl business district got much lower rates. What to do, bank all don have Currency.

2.5 still ain't too bad... We've survived through 3.0 for the past year tongue.gif

Just hope that when the uni fees are due, the exchange rate will be very forgiving. Otherwise during daily lives whether it's 2.3 or 2.5 makes little difference. I've always considered it to be 3.0 even though it was 2.7/2.8 last time for quick and easy conversions when buying stuff, and it deters you from spending unnecessarily. And now it's easy to count by multiplication of 2.5... times 2 plus half, or times 10 divide 4.

Avoid exchanging at airports if possible as their rates are definitely higher than other places.

I'm due to be up in Brisbane for a business trip this week or early next week. I would like to spare time to meet up for lunch (maybe) or even for dinner. That is..if anyone in Brisbane is interested.

I'll have a few other business trips to Sydney, NZ and Singapore, so if i match the names to faces, that'd be great.

hit me up anyone in brisbane yo!

Lectures - held in lecture halls that can sit up to a few hundred students, where usually the teacher do all the talking and you listen and absorb stuff that are being presented by the lecturers...you can always skip lectures and study on your own..dl notes from the net and stuff...at your own risk tho

Tutorials - normally held in classrooms about 20-40 a class, so here you do your homework and stuff and discuss it with the lecturers, ask question and stuff..so this is important..and it is compulsory to attend tutorials.

generally speaking,

lectures = you sit in a hall with hundreds of others mainly listening to the prof talking in front of the class

tutorials = you sit in a small room/tea room/pantry/cafe etc with few other students, usually approx 10, and you're expected to discuss, not sit there and merely listen.
