And it still sounds good?I'm surprised because PC speakers work best within a very short distance like 2-3 feet, because anything further than that you lose a lot of details, dynamic range, clarity, bass, etc. And also because, PC speakers aren't even designed to drive sound to the whole room, what more for a distance of let's say 8-10 feet? |

QUOTE(-kytz- @ Mar 1 2011, 12:03 PM) And it still sounds good? i think the S530 is not just another set of PC speakers.. try them if you havent heard them..I'm surprised because PC speakers work best within a very short distance like 2-3 feet, because anything further than that you lose a lot of details, dynamic range, clarity, bass, etc. And also because, PC speakers aren't even designed to drive sound to the whole room, what more for a distance of let's say 8-10 feet? i personally found it to be good, and in fact better than those sub RM1k HTIB set, as most of those are using only a single full range driver with a big woofer housing a tiny sub. Sub is powerful, but not boomy, and sats are reproducing the mids nicely... and also the fact that i like it to be made of wooden MDF housing for all speakers.. check the specs for s530 below » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « This post has been edited by kevin613: Mar 1 2011, 12:46 PM |

QUOTE(-kytz- @ Mar 1 2011, 12:03 PM) And it still sounds good? That depends on the output power (or wattage). Nowadays many PC speakers are not the tiny "multimedia speakers" of yesteryears. Many are already quite powerful (looking at the RMS wattage, not the marketing "PMPO" one). Many are already quite powerful (looking at the RMS wattage, not the marketing "PMPO" one). Not really. Power isn't the issue most of the time. Do note that speakers are optimized for "throw" meaning due to the inherent design, there is a sweet spot in regards to distortion and frequency response (maybe HTF) in regards to direction and distance. Getting to know the "field" of a pair of speakers is often more important than other characteristics. You have very near fields like the Klipsch Promedia 2.0 Ultra, Bowers and Wilkins MM-1, Harman Kadons GLA-55 and so forth with very tight sweet spots of about 1 to 1.5 meters, with mid field compensated systems such as powered monitors like the M-Audio DSM3, the sweet spot extends to 2 to 4 meters. Knowing where to sit is crucial to knowing what you want |

Notably System Audio ones have these characteristics. This post has been edited by lex: Mar 2 2011, 04:46 PM |

Generally the first parts will be factored in by the manufacturer and all have a configuration that delivers optimal performance. Plus most multimedia speakers are self powered and don't work with amps. With certain high end monitors, sitting position isn't very crucial as those speakers have great transparency, expansive sound stage and stereo imaging (as well as literally can fill the whole room, and the sounds seems to be everywhere rather than from the speakers themselves). Notably System Audio ones have these characteristics. Positioning and so forth will depend on what the manufacturer wants from the speaker. Increasing the size of the soundstage and reducing directionality often increases distortion in certain harmonics and so forth. Much like any other form of engineering, not such thing as a free lunch lol. But I do serious audio with my HD650s, my own amps and my standalone DACs. Enjoying the new DAC1 USB I just go though. MM-1 does fine for gaming. This post has been edited by empire23: Mar 3 2011, 03:22 AM |

Plus most multimedia speakers are self powered and don't work with amps. However depending on design, quite a number of "multimedia speakers" can interchange parts as well... such as the satellite speakers. Replacing a single driver (full range) with a 2-way driver (tweeter and mid-randge) can significantly improve the sound especially bringing out the highs. Of course, one criteria when changing speakers is impedance matching. QUOTE(empire23 @ Mar 3 2011, 03:17 AM) Positioning and so forth will depend on what the manufacturer wants from the speaker. Much like any other form of engineering, not such thing as a free lunch lol. I'd heard those SA speakers before, and I must say their sound stage is pretty accurate actually (can even tell and point out the direction/source of each sound) while filling the room (forward sounding). In comparison with others (e.g. the usual Mission, KEF, JBL, Harmon Kardon, etc), not even close to its performance. But the price of those SAs are out of my range.
