QUOTE(Solero @ Jan 12 2009, 12:35 AM) I'm gonna send my cpu for some upgrades tomorrow and I really really wanna delete some private stuff.. I mean PERMANENTLY.. Anyone have any free-ware that does this? I googled alot but none seems reliable.. I mean those free ones.. Any suggestions ppl? One quick way is to do an EFS on the files/folders and do a permanent delete (empty recycle bin). Once the OS is reinstalled those files cannot be retrieved!, finito. Also, it comes with Windows 2000 and up...nothing extra needed. Cheers --quite curious about those files you're about to destroy --- How to EFS? --> http://www.petri.co.il/what%27s_efs.htm

mayb u should try eraser. good and reliable. i have been using this in office. QUOTE Eraser is an advanced security tool (for Windows), which allows you to completely remove sensitive data from your hard drive by overwriting it several times with carefully selected patterns. Works with Windows 95, 98, ME, NT, 2000, XP, Vista, Windows 2003 Server and DOS. Eraser is Free software and its source code is released under GNU General Public License.
The patterns used for overwriting are based on Peter Gutmann's paper "Secure Deletion of Data from Magnetic and Solid-State Memory" and they are selected to effectively remove magnetic remnants from the hard drive.
Other methods include the one defined in the National Industrial Security Program Operating Manual of the US Department of Defence and overwriting with pseudorandom data. You can also define your own overwriting methods.
Erase files and folders securely. Download eraser CODE http://www.heidi.ie/node/6
