I'm also looking at the Speed P8.
2011 spec: http://www.dahon.com/bikes/2011/speed-p8
2013 spec: http://www.cso.co.jp/bikeshop/dahon/fdb/13speedp8.html

Didn't really go deep into every detail but quickly noticed that 2013 model has thinner tyres and no seatpost pump. sad.gif

Some other Dahons: http://hashirin.com/archives/1481912.html

Easier to take the whole seatpost out! That's what I do when I have to fit in 3 bikes into a car with 3 passengers. Unlike the Dahon Speed P8 which already has a fast release for the wheel sets, the Eco 7s don't have. I modified the hub shaft into those that can fit fast release skewers. It cost only RM60 for both wheels with the skewers included. Now it is even easier to fit in more bikes with the wheelsets taken out.  rclxms.gif

nothing done yet just a plan, tempted to get those like ultegra or tiagra (but in real life it will cheap one from taobao) for the freewheel will stick with 7 speed, just want to change to shimano megarange. all of tis will be done after i finish with my old apekbike.

You'll also need an FD adaptor to hold the FD in place. The one for "SP8" would fit.
With the Tiagra/Ultegra FD, you can still use MTB shifters which are flat bar type and cheaper compared to roadie flat bar shifters. Just need to make sure the chain can accomodate your new arrangement. smile.gif

Dahon Eco C7 comes with a Tourney RD and a microshift shifter. If you want to fix a FD, you might as well get a set of Altus or Acera shifters for 7/8 speed for both sides. Trigger shifters are better than grip shifters. Most shifters comes in pairs anyway. Also check if there are old stocks for Alivio 8 speed trigger shifters and also change to an 8 speed freewheel. There are some cheaper aftermarket 8 speed freewheel cogs. Check with the cycle shops. The Tourney RD can be used for 8 speed also ( I have tried but shifting is not perfect ) but has since change to a Deore RD.

What crank will you be using? I have check the cheapest seems to be FSA for road bikes, 53/39T. Can you snap a photo of the modifications and post it here?  icon_rolleyes.gif

Yup, FSA seems to be cheaper of the bigger brands. 53/39T will be OK for Ultegra/Tiagra, but if you go to a lower range like Sora, then max chainring size is 52T only.

Both the Tern P9 and the Dahon MU8 are good foldies and basically both has the same specs except the Tern has 9 speed and the Dahon 8 speed but the final gear is still 32T on both bikes with the crank 52T. So, the gear ratio is the same at the lowest gear! The more I looked at it, the more the Tern's frame looks like a Dahon Speed 8 except for their own patented folding mechanism while the MU8 looks more solid. I think the choice is really up to your own personal choice as performance is almost the same.

One advantage of the Tern is that the handlebar folds to the outside which I think is better because as time goes on, you will add more items onto your handlebar and in Dahon's case (folds between the folded frame) too much will obstruct the closeness the fold can go. I have to take out the whole handlebar when I fold but if it was folded out, it won't be a problem. Likewise, the other day I modified a U-bolt (2 1/2 ") to the handlebar post to hold my water bottle cage. It was a nice place to put the water bottle but the post folds inside between the frame and the cage was obstructing a full fold! So, I have to clamp it onto the seat post!

Funnily though, Terns are sold more cheaper than Dahons abroad. The Dahons cost more but here in Malaysia they are more expensive. There's a RM500 difference though between the cost of the compared bikes! Dahon is cheaper. If you can find a Dahon Speed 8, it's cheaper by almost RM800 with the same design frame and geometry. My advise, try to look at the Dahon Speed 8 as well. biggrin.gif

Alternatively you can mount a bottle cage in front of the headset. Fits with an M5x10mm. One of the "holes" on the bottle cage needs to be adjustable though. smile.gif
