Hi Guys. I am trying to find a 20'' folding bike with suspensions. Any recommendations? Please do not quote the Dahon Jetstream EX as it is too expensive!!

from wht i've read ,
if u mainly cycle on road, you don't really need a suspended bike.
r u cycling offroad like a mtb using the folding bike?
if u buy cheap suspended bike, with suspension tht u can't adjust, u will waste more energy pedaling,
if u like the feel of solid power transfer to the back wheel frm ur pedal, hv to go for a hard tail.

u read that samo mentioned that he prefered to tour with his speed p8 after riding his RM 10,000 jetstream frm morib to bagan lalang.... why?

hah... he din mentioned why....
but i guess probably it is because of the full suspension....
if the setting is soft, it just waste ur energy, he is heavy, sure the shocks are moving alot....

one reason from dahon/tern is also that, u dun need to use suspension on small bikes,
u can use fat tyres like the schwalbe " big apple " it will help to absorb road shocks effectively.

Thanks H2D for the explanations, but i am a middle aged rider and all the jarring from uneven roads are causing pains on my arms and back. A front suspensions might absolve the shocks from uneven roads. Maybe i should change to a bigger schwalbe big apple tyres. At the moment i am riding a Dahon Dash P18 using a standard schwalbe kojak tyres.

I hv dash p18 as well.

the kojak is high pressure road tyre. very bumpy, u need to ride it on tarmac.

aluminum frame is hard as well.

try speed p8
with steel frame n big apple.
ppl swear tht steel makes a big difference.

Strange that Rock Shox and other good suspension makers are not making suspensions for 20" foldies? I am sure it would be a big market for them. Only sub-standard made in china bikes are producing foldies with suspensions!

How long have you been riding the p18?
P18 is  a sweet bike, try changing the contacts point like your grips, handlebar and tires like fatter, low pressure ones like the BAs. or visit the Dahon section about getting the right fit for your bike. Or avoid uneven roads entirely?
*
I have been riding the Dahon Vitesse D7 for the last two years and got the Dash P18 last month. Off course the Dash P18 is a stiffer and fast bike but it shakes and rattles when going fast over an uneven road. Maybe i am not use to it's stiffer body yet, as the Vitesse D7 has a more comfy ride. Anyhow i am trying to recce new routes with a smooth tarmac, but you can't get it anywhere in Petaling Jaya with a good long stretch. Even in Putrajaya, some portions of the roads are using printed concrete and pavers that make the ride so uncomfortable.

haha! got p18 a month, saw a birdy terus mau upgrade! haha! sabar, next month Xmas come! bikes are always a balance of comfort and speed, more of 1 less of the other. easiest thing to do is tukar tyres, the fatter the better.
if you are not oversized then you can run the tyres at the lower end of the range, have you tried that with the kojaks?

Doesn't fancy a birdy lah. Me think it is over priced and over hyped. I have seen a KHS foldie with suspensions at FBK @ Mutiara Damansara for less than Rm3k. Might sapu that one!!

I have ride around the lakes near the Putrajaya mosque and PICC. Many road bikes there especially sunday mornings. The stretch in front of the Ministry of Finance and Palace of Justice is paved with printed concrete. Good to test your suspensions there!

My new 20" KHS foldie with suspensions. Just completed a 10km trial run and it has a very comfortable ride. The front suspensions can be lock.

what;s the damage?
gona sell the dash p18?
the seat looks like ada spring >?

Less than Rm3k with some freebies. The seat is Bridegestone with some spring. I change the standard seat to this, as it is quite big and comfortable for my butt! I am still keeping the Dash P18 for the odd speed works. Including the KSH, I have 7 foldies stash in the store room! One day, I ll have a "Jual Murah".

The airnimal (animal? air minimal?) cost about US3K roughly Rm9-10K. A direct competitor to Dahon Jetstream EX. This is the 'porsche' of folding bikes!!

Fook Sang is one of the distributor for Hasa Minimax M2. (GPS 101 37.289 E and 3 5.196 N)
The place is a bit run down but they stock many bicycles and accessories and their prices are reasonable. Nearby KSH Merida Bicycles in Taman Megah is a bit up market and provide good service from their experts. There is another bicycle shop in Taman Megah, but i am not recommending it because they are Langsi!

I am not sure that all items at Fook Sang are reasonable. Two days ago I went to Fook Sang to buy some accessories. One of the items that I bought was Camelbak Podium Chill Bottle for RM45 after discount from RM53. But yesterday I saw the particular bottle listed for RM45 at Rodalink Bangsar.

Bargain and bargain and bargain...maa!
The Hasa Minimax M2, i was quoted for Rm2.3k by Fook Sang but got myself a KSH ridgewood dual suspensions instead, for Rm2.5k at Fbike Trading.

Thanks all. So which offer better price? Fook Sang or KSH Merida?

roksta, the KSH ridgewood dual suspensions is it better than the minimax?

Added on November 24, 2011, 5:13 pmWith this price it's pretty hard not to consider the dahon dash P18 as well. H2D, the dash P18 can fit into a normal sedan car boot after folded?

That is the one million dollar question. Which bike is best for you?
Of course the higher the cost of the bike, the better it is.
It all depends on your needs and of course your budget.
Over the years, i have bought the foldable Dahon Espresso, Vittesse D7, Hummer, Orbit, Dash P18 and KSH Ridgewood.
The best for me is the KSH Ridgewood because of the suspensions, 24 speed, it's portability, comfortable ride and stiff body. The Dash P18 is very fast, very stiff but the ride is uncomfortable bucause of the kojak tyres.

I think you should try and test whatever bike first before buying but as you know, many shops would not let you do it as they think you might ride away with it.

Anyhow, this is only my personal opinion and other members, especially our friend H2D could offer better advice.

LTO, it is a jungle out there when it comes to choosing a good bike. If your budget is below RM2k, may i suggest you try the Dahon speed P8, Vitesse D7 or the Eco C3/7 first. Do not try others as Dahon is a well proven brand. Do check the thousand of reviews on the Dahon products.
Happy hunting!

Added on November 25, 2011, 11:55 amH2D, I am thinking of replacing my Dash P18 Schwalbe kojak to Schwalbe's Big Apple. Which size will be more comfortable and do you know the cost and shop that sells the BA?

Another Tern's latch problem. If it happens in the US, the whole bike's shipment would be recall back to Taiwan. In Malaysia, anything goes......

Don't buy this bike until they solve all this problems.

they oni have 2.0 big apple, RM 89 i think. it will def fit d dash p18 cos the fork width is same as speed p8,
but to get the 2.35 size, will have to look for other brand or import frm oversea.

H2D, i called Rodalink Bangsar and as what you said, they only have schwalbe 20x2.0 only and it cost Rm89 with another RM39 for the tube. The guy told me he has never fitted a schwalbe 20x2.0 to a Dash P18 before so he wouldn't know whether it would fit! Anyhow he is willing to give try! Total cost is RM256.00

I will change the tires one fine day.
