Tern are good bikes  thumbup.gif . The cheapest and most basic is the Tern C7 and as said, it's a 7 speed unit and the Tern D8 is 8 speed for a few more hundred bucks. I would suggest though to take the Tern C7 as it comes with Shimano Tourney rear derailleur but this is not the winning point. The winning point is, the frame has a rear derailleur hanger as opposed to the D8 which uses Neos RD which are screwed at a different location compared to Tourney. This means you can only change to other Neos RD or get a modified RD adapter which is hard to find and also not part of the original frame attachment.

With the C7, you can easily upgrade to 9 speed Shimano RDs and shifters and cassette. Van's is not the cheapest place you can get the Terns, that I can bet with you. Shop around!  tongue.gif

The frame of C7 And D8 is different, the folding of c7 is same as the dahon internal folding. tern D8 is external fold, fold faster but slightly bigger.

D8 is bang of the buck, C7 wheel set cannot be upgraded with 8+ speed cassette, only D8 can go from 8-9-10 speeds.

I would say if you want, you should go with the D8 and slowly upgrade. you can check out the TERNout@sg facebook group of SG for more Poison upgrades.

Before I bought my Brompton, I was looking at Tern P18 or x10 as the frame is more superior than P9 frame, the only thing that hold me back is the colour. As for performance I test them and they ride fast, but not sturdy at high speed due to the frame design, if you need speed and folding, Tyrell fx is way to go but they are not cheap at all.

There was a few recall on their frame which also another reason that hold me back. Chain dropping issue and few of my friends had broken spokes on their knetic pro rims made me question about their QC.

As for C7 or D8, personally i will go for D8 which i think it is the most bang of the buck of tern bikes, you get the TERN outside fold not the original Dahon fold in C7. You can get it for 17XX only and it will be very easy to upgrade to 10 speeds or 20 speeds.

P9 is very unacceptable as you are paying alot and you only get a crappy grip twist shifter, many owners will replace them with thumb shifter for more performance.

Others are really overprice for their quality and their value don't hold as good as Brompton.

Why i choose Brompton in the end?
1. they are proven to last
2. very unique folding
3. extremely compact folding
4. replacement parts are very easy to get.
5. I don't need speed for riding a folding bike, i want to enjoy the views. (I manage to hit 50km/h[GPS] on down slop)
6. I can fit the bike under my work desk as I cycle to work everyday.

The only drawback is the weight 13kg for a M6R.

I got my parents and girl friend into cycling after they ride my brompton.

Just my two cents.
