1st incident, i didn't wash my jeans for almost 6 months but when my mum saw it, he immediately took it and turned it as a door mat in front of the bathroom door.

2nd incident, i was going for a record and trying to achieve for more than six months only to be interrupted by my wife. after 3 months she put it in the washing machine and there goes my record attempt.

if u look back into history, jeans arent meant to be washed and was built for tough. thats why many working class americans long time ago wore them (read:laborers) but that was then. i wash mine every 6 months.

but as a realist, u wash them when they stink like a dead animal or uve just spilt ketchup on it or u got into an accident and is soaked in blood.

anways, jeans are those kinda clothes that looks good when its worn out or dirty. clean, light washed jeans are hideous tongue.gif

6 months first wash, 3 month dryclean 'cos there was a food accident, followed by alcohol + coke in the club.

Now, I've spilled cheese on it, lemonade on it and it's starting to smell (3 months) so it's going in for a wash again.

I gotta be more careful.

Just washed. Dr. Bronner's soap. No damage done, except for an uncomfortable shrink. My thighs just got bigger from the gym again. I should've done this during the holidays. Meh.

Once every 3 months, sometimes longer than that...I wear jeans mostly on weekends. It'll be quite a waste to wash jeans often because the colour will fade.

i usually wash my jeans after i wore them 5 times perhaps. not sure how long is it takes tho. i hardly wear them coz it's freakin' hot nowadays.
and also, i don't wear jeans during rainy days. cool2.gif

that's good la coz it didn't produce any bad smell..

""hang it under the sunlight"" i think it wasn't a good idea to hang your denim/jeans under the sunlight..

usually, denim enthusiast suggest to air dry the denim/jeans and not hang them directly under the sunlight..

Erm... I like my denim when its hairy.

Fyi, it usually happened if you washed/soaked it for the first time. But don't worry coz the denim hairs would gone with some wearing.

There's nothing more comfortable than a pair of jeans that's not been washed for months...the moment it gets washed have to wait a few wearings for it to soften and adhere to my body's shape once again. Hail unwashed dirty jeans ! biggrin.gif

Yeah, jeans tend to shrink(only a small %, below 1% perhaps?) when it get washed. That's why it will feel more gross..(btulkah ayat ku ni?) laugh.gif

according to a jean's expert from a magazine i read(i think its mens health), NEVER wash your jeans.
even if u hav to coz a lady's lipstick is on it(u dont wanna get caught by your gf) then bath with it. yes. invite that lady who 'accidently' 'kiss' your jeans for a erotic bath together wink.gif

as a result, your jeans will look more original

I am the sort who wash all my jeans very frequently. It is not a big issue for me. And I really don't get it why people don't wash their jeans. They said after 6 months not washing, the jeans will have some sorts of difference. Still I don't get it.

try wearing a new jeans for months without washing then wash it once. you will notice it broken down nicely. honeycomb forms and so on. besides washing often deteriorates the colour

I been experimenting with one pair of jeans. Almost a year since I washed it. I only wear it once or twice a week for a few hrs usually at night. It doesn't look or feel filthy but there is a slight weird smell developing LOL. But for hygiene reasons I'm washing it first thing tmw morning. But I got to admit that the pair of jeans just feels damm nice to wear.

have been wearing my jeans for the past 6 months almost daily wear and have not wash it once. gonna hit the one year mark around my birthday during october so prolly gonna wash it then. haha.

washing jeans loses the indigo which makes the fading less impressive but if you're wearing a pair of washed jeans no point not washing it. and by washed jeans i mean those that are already treated when bought.

Bull. Frequent washing will of course wash off the indigo faster. But you will have no contrast. Contrast is the key in fades.

If you haven't got any contrast, your fades would be the whole jeans turning from

Indigo > light indigo > white

the entire thing.

Jeans are not pants so IMHO it was meant to be broken. Therefore, avoid washing jeans. Make sure it is 75% damaged, 23% dirty, and 2% smelly. After that only you wash. A little bit. *ROFL*

ASK THE PRO
Tips on Maintenance

Denim Works, located in Shibuya, is a shop that's trusted by serious denim collectors. They do everything from repairs and hemming with chain stitches, customizations such as downsizing the waist size and modifying the silhouette, production of original jeans and made-to-order jeans. It's an incredible shop for denim lovers looking for highly skilled help and practical advice.

The owner of Denim Works, Takashi Fukuda, who has done countless numbers of denim repairs shares his maintenance knowledge here.

1. Is it true that you shouldn't wash your jeans to get beautiful contrasts?

It is true if you are looking just for contrasts. But as you wear your jeans, sweat and grease gets inside the fabric, making it soggier and weaker against abrasion. In other words, your denim becomes prone to rip apart. So if you want your denim to last you should wash your denim often. During winter, wash your denim when it starts feeling a little damp.

2. Is it true that it's better to turn your jeans inside-out when you wash them?

If you read fashion magazines and stuff, they'll say things like, "Dry your jeans inside-out. If not your denim will get sunburned and will lose its color." But when it comes to vintage denim, it's a different story. Quite often, vintage jeans will have threads that have weakened over time. If you turn the jeans inside-out, the thread can get caught in the washing machine, causing it to tear apart. If possible, put your jeans, without turning it inside-out, inside a net before throwing it into a washing machine, then wash softly. Because it's a precious article, one might think of washing it slowly with hand... but that's going a bit too overboard. When you're drying it, don't worry about things like sunburns. For example, if you're wearing your jeans during summer, you're exposing it in the sun the whole time, yet it's never a problem. However, if you have just purchased a new denim, you would want to wash your jeans two to three times inside-out to get rid of starch.

3. Will your fabric tighten up and become more durable if you dry your denim in a dryer?

It's not like it's absolutely bad, but if you use a dryer, your fabric will shrink radically and the denim's surface will become soft. If you prefer your denim to be somewhat rigid, it's much better to dry it naturally in the sun. It will dry crisply and it also feels good to wear something that has been sitting in the sun. Drying naturally is the best.

Continued from previous post*

4. Is it better to avoid detergent with bleach?

Bleach, not only will turn your whole jeans white, but will also hurt its fabric. You probably don't have to worry about detergents with just tiny amount of bleach in it. But for those who really care, it's probably better to use denim detergents specifically designed to effectively remove grease and stains. I've actually heard of people who use spring water to wash their denims to avoid small amount of chlorine that's inside tap water, but I wouldn't worry about such a small amount of chlorine.

5. I've heard I shouldn't use any detergent, but is it okay to use it when I feel like my jeans are getting too dirty?

While ago during vintage denim craze, it was said that it's cool to not wash your jeans. There was a time when people celebrated the idea of not washing and respected people who claimed "I haven't washed my jeans for one whole year." But that's just a myth and it's better to wash your jeans often. Cellulose inside sweat and grease damages the fabric. If you let your jeans go dirty for a while, it could cause your denim to tear suddenly. If you wash often, your fabric can stay in a good shape and will result in longevity.

6. If my denim rips, can I repair it myself?

If you don't screw up basic procedures, you can repair simple tears in places like the knee and the crotch. I even recommend this to customers who visit my shop. For patching, you can buy the denim from fabric stores or get them from jeans you've stopped wearing. Then all you need to do is just carefully sew using a sewing machine. If you sew along the direction of your denim's weave pattern, it'll be hard to notice the patch. Another way to do it is to use a fabric from your favorite shirt you can't wear anymore and patch your jeans up in a trendy fashion. Things like that could deepen your affection toward your jeans.

7. Take preventative measures before damage worsens. (Extra)

I'll never say things like "Store it in the drawers because it's vintage!" Vintage jeans are cool when they are worn. But of course, jeans that have been worn for years have denim fabric and threads that have become fragile. Especially cotton yarns are very prone to tears. Although you can't change this fact, it's better to take preventative measures like patching your denim early before they start to rip apart. Other than that, you can maintain your denim by washing and drying in ways that won't harm the fabric as explained in this page.

Drying naturally is the best.

it depends

if you are going for the high contrast fade between the raw denim and the distressing, then you avoid washing for as long as possible

if you have a cheap pair of beater jeans that you wear for clubbing and all that, wash it and keep it clean

all these while, i dun have any preference or deep knowledge about denim distressing.

in contrast, i am more to hygienic.

so now.... i plan to do this:

1. GAP jeans - try to continue wear as long as i could

2. cheaper jeans from padini - wear and wash biggrin.gif
