The Latest Waja, The Waja CPS
user posted image

The long-awaited Proton Campro CPS engine is now available in Malaysia (it was first introduced in Bangkok last year) with the Waja 1.6 Premium being the first model to have it. For those who are not familiar with this engine, it incorporates Cam Profile Switching (which is where the ‘CPS’ comes from), a mechanism which varies intake valve timing to enhance performance throughout the rpm range. The mechanism was developed by Lotus Engineering, a subsidiary of Proton.

Additionally, the Campro CPS engine also has a Variable Intake Manifold (VIM) which optimises the intake airflow volume according to driving conditions and is especially helpful in boosting torque at the low end. The VIM is a more sophisticated version of the Intake Air-fuel Module (IAFM) used in the Campro 1.3-litre engine of the new Saga.

user posted image
The maximum power output of the new Campro 1.6 CPS engine is 125 bhp (about 92 kW), 13% more than the 110 bhp on the non-CPS/VIM Campro engine. The new engine, in addition to providing smooth and responsive drivability, is said to be environment-friendly and complies with the latest European emission regulations.

With the CPS mechanism, Proton claims that the new Waja offers significant improvement in terms of drivability with maximum torque now increased to 150Nm. More importantly, the criticism of non-CPS engine that was first launched with the Gen2 – poor low-end torque – is now claimed to be addressed and Proton states that there is ‘better response and torque launch at low engine speeds of between 2000 - 2500 rpm when driving in the city’. During highway driving, it is also claimed that there will be better overtaking performance in the third, fourth and fifth gears within the 2,500 - 4,500 rpm engine speed range. The new Waja is available with a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission.

There are also changes to the interior design of the model to add further value to customers. The model now comes with electric remote door mirror with electric folding housing, front seat with 3-way adjustable head rest (up, down and tilt), gated auto gear shifter (for automatic transmission), new centre panel switches and finishing, as well as a keyless trunk remote system, ABS, fog lamps, alloy rims and leather upholstery as standard.

Other additional features include xenon headlamps auto-levelling (so that other motorists are not dazzled), dual tailpipes, UV-cut windscreen glass and a ‘Euro-compliant body structure’.

"Proton is striving to improve ourselves in every aspect, particularly in terms of product offerings. With that in mind, we felt it was time the Waja evolved as well. The time is right for this change and I'm optimistic the market will receive this new model in a positive manner," said Proton MD, Dato' Haji Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir.

also really looking for perfomance increase, as usual, auto tranny not enough power, luckily still using 15" stock gen 2 rims, planning to change to 16" rims, so need to increase perfomance a little bit,

thinking to change air filter, few ppl say it could increase car performance, but not sure for waja auto to change to which one, open pod or drop in? got forrumer said change to high flow air filter enough already, got idea on which brand?

thanks guys

actually Waja has a good CAI air intake already. i was also thinking of modding the air intake but can't think of anything to improve it. If u use open pod, you will make the performance worse because Waja engine bay quite hot.

i know how to install, but describe in word is real difficult. basically u need to remove the window glass from the white holder. and the white holder is connected to the wire on the plastic power window. Secondly remove the cable that connect to your door handle and that is real difficult to do so, then installing back the window glass is another challenge.

go for K&N drop in is good enough. If u wanna change to 16" then look for real light weight rims that is not more then 6.5kg/rim. Other then that remove your cat-con and use bypass or 4-2-1 (powerzone, hotbits, zenden) if u have budget. Get a bullet and s-flow (top cat). Again, if u have sufficient budget then go for Mugen, Apexi, FGK & etc.....

ic, by the way, for air filter, what do you recommend? just change the filter to high flow filter or change to drop in? if drop in, what brand and usually how much it cost,

also, i have a problem with my aircon, if i of the aircon and let the blower run, the smell is terrible, smell like something dead inside the tube, but if i switch on the aircon, no more bad/faul smell

air filter for me.. i recommend drop-in.. coz its quite cheap and don't need to change the whole set of filter.. brand either K&N or UTR.. as i know UTR is selling cheap now.. K&N is good coz off 99% filtration due to its mesh being oil.. but cleaning u hav to buy a set of cleaning kit.. UTR metal-flow is 97% filtration but can just wash using water no need cleaning kit.. both good.. i'm using UTR btw.. easy cleaning and cheap also ur FC remains the same..

but if u want abit more power.. go for open-pod air filter.. it just that.. what i heard that FC abit kuat plus u need to do heat shield coz u only want the cool air to go in not the hot air as there are alot of other components that generates heat under ur hood.. lots of brand for open pod that is good.. K&N is one off em'..

i think ur air-cond filter need to check.. coz i got the same problem b4 when open the blower smells like and old house.. service my air-cond and after that its ok.. correct me if i'm wrong.. hehe

K&N, drop in cost me RM240+. Can get from automotive garage subforum. Try to find member name kangyoon (if not mistaken).

The aircond smell is most probably due to the filter. Try to change it.
