QUOTE
Many people have been asking for an alternative way to lock folders without the use of any software. So, here you go.

1. Open Notepad and copy the below code
2. Change your password in the code it's shown the place where to type your password.
3. Save file as locker.bat .
4. Now double click on locker .bat
5. I t will create folder with Locker automatically for u. After creation of the Locker folder, place the contents u want to lock inside the Locker Folder and run locker.bat again .

Or you can use TrueCrypt, different method but still can get your files/folders password protected.

Your My Documents folder is private by default, so other limited users will not be able to access it. That's why the checkbox is grayed out. However, users with Administrator access can access anything, which makes it useless.

To make your folder private, it depends on how tech savvy the other users of your computer are. If they don't really know much about Windows, just change their user account to a limited one and they won't be able to access anything within C:\Documents and Settings\Jodie\ (if Jodie is your user name).

However, if that's not possible, you'll need to play around with:
a) Hiding your folder
b) Disabling permissions
c) Using third party software

a) is simple, put the folder somewhere which can't be found easily and/or change it to hidden. Remember to uncheck Folder Options>View Hidden Files. Not really helpful if other users do a search for files though.

b) protects your files by preventing other users from viewing/accessing them. This includes searches too. It'll work as usual for you, but other users will get an "Access Denied" message if they try to open your folder. You'll need to use the Security tab if you're on XP Pro to change permissions on the folder and set Deny permissions to all other users on your computer. It doesn't matter if they are Administrators, since Deny permissions override everything. They can change it back if they're tech savvy enough though. If you're on XP Home, it's still possible to restrict permissions through cacls.exe, but it'll be much harder to do so.

c) I won't cover this one, since there are plenty of recommendation threads around. Just look around for one you like and use it. Bear in mind that people who use your computer can find out what password you use easily.

lol so true. I remodify back to txt file and change the password and still can open. Not a class 1 protection I might say. Presumably if the guy is a noob or change the bat file to "MS-DOS.bat", just have ta assume the guy wont know what bat is and wont have the idea of changing the extension name. lol

That's why you need a Bat to Exe Converter. You can download it here: http://www.download.com/Bat-To-Exe-Convert...4-10555897.html biggrin.gif

That might actually work (but still not a good enough protection but good enough from computer amateur with no knowledge of coding). Will try later. Now does anybody know of a way of rewriting the code so that we do not need to go to the text file everytime we want to change the password?

Actually this bat script protection isn't really secure. Even if you can't view them in windows, you're still able to see the files if you use linux (or any other non-windows OS) doh.gif .
Ya if anyone knows how to modify the bat codes, please icon_question.gif .
Anyway, there're lots of Jack Sparrow hide folder software out there, all you need it Google brows.gif . I'm using Universal Shield, it's very good!
