512. around 300 will be used for XP to run.
winamp requires around 50mb RAM to run.
nowadays, the RAM is so cheap, may consider to replace with 2gb RAM.

for the thread's title, i am preferring
1. winamp
2. real player

If you want the best of the best, CCCP is the best collection of filters out there to run virtually all video files.

And f00bar is the most customizable audio application out there so it tops the charts.

If you noticed, he mentioned that he's running on DDR RAM and not DDRII RAM. DDR RAM is two times more expensive per "gb" when compared with DDRII.

ok.
even at double-up price, my best guess, 512mb = RM60 & 1gb = RM100.
still cheap comparing to 3 years back pricing.

Audio:

1)Winamp - work quite stable and can get many pretty skin
2)TTPlayer - can view the lyrics as well while playing song (not recommended if you don understand Chinese)

Video:

Media Player Classic - can play almost every kind of codec

Worst advice ever. Unless you have an iPod or iPhone, I wouldn't recommend it at all. It consumes a lot of resource even while idling and lags even if you have a lot of RAM. iTunes is also packaged with a lot of crap like Quicktimes and Apple Update Manager. If you really want Coverflow, Songbird can do that with plugins.

Well it depends, some post here for the sake of post count and some just wanted to let people know their preferences on audio/video playback.

Currently I'm using foobar2000 for music playback and Media Player Classic Homecinema (with some basic filters mostly from the CCCP, as well as Real Alternative) for video. I like the simplicity of both of these players in terms of interface and they have lots of features as well.

For video I prefer Media Player Classic Home Cinema with vista codec package. Why MPC-HC? Because it has support Directx Video Acceleration, DXVA, which not available in any other video player.
