Hi guys, i need some answers before i purchase an Iphone 3g from the US.
Ive read the pinned topic :
"Locked phone need to:
1. Jailbreak so we can gain access to the phone (mandatory)
2. Activate the phone thru ‘hacktivation’ or activation spoof (also mandatory)
3. Unlock the phone with a software unlocking sollution to use with other sim (also mandatory)

This goes the same with locked phones. We need to jailbreak the phone first so that we can access the filesystem. Then we ‘hacktivate’ or activate the phone by tricking it with a spoof activation. This bypass the itunes checking and let us gain access to the springboard."

So, assuming that i purchase an Iphone 3g from the US with contract and an older baseband version,

First i need to jailbreak the phone, and then i need to activate the phone by tricking it with spoof activation right? I've got 2 questions

1)Since my baseband is older, jailbreaking it will make it harder for an update to v2.2 with the latest baseband right?
2)Is there an activation spoof out there for iphone 3g?

Thanks so much for your time. I apologize if this question has been answered before.

i would pardon your ignorance since your a newbie,
but do read this thread up
http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/888017
or this
http://blog.iphone-dev.org/post/67797811/dont-eat-yellowsn0w

when your baseband is older, just updating it to the new firmware would change it to the latest
and the latest baseband are the ones needed for the new soft-unlock.

in layman terms
update>jailbreak>add repo>download it> let it run>reboot> you are good to go

i've not tried the unlocking yet but these are the rough procedures taken to make the unlock work.

do close this thread up after you have found your answers.

please read here again,

http://blog.iphone-dev.org/post/67797811/dont-eat-yellowsn0w

there it says,

QUOTE
the unlock works exclusively with baseband 02.28.00. This baseband is provided by the latest firmware update (2.2) from Apple. You’ll need to upgrade to this release using iTunes and then use QuickPwn to activate etc. There are plenty of tutorials about this on iclarified, bigboss, and other established tutorial sites.  Because it works on 02.28.00, it is available to everyone on the planet.  This means we don’t need to unnecessarily expose holes in earlier basebands, which is an important concern.

so yeah, simply put it's like what Hanxz already stated before,

QUOTE
jailbreak(+activate) > add repo > download yellowsn0w > let it run > reboot > you are good to go

btw before u install yellowsn0w make sure u installed the latest firmware first (with the latest baseband) as yellowsn0w will not run on earlier version.

mmm...btw dont worry, it's good to check again and again before proceeding any step. it's no harm to be extra cautious, but u can always read the guides thoroughly and u'll have the answer already.

all details already provided by Hanxz. but in case u still havent found your answer, afraid not coz Hanxz also provide iPhone Community Service.

I think you got me wrong again....im farmiliar with the steps for yellowsn0w.

You see there are 2 stages Apple did to bind the contract sim with the iphone:
1)Activation via Itunes(cannot access springboard)<-----i want to know if i can activate this part
2)Locked to operator(cannot call etc).<---this is where yellowsn0w comes in

thanks

From what I know you need an AT & T sim card to activate if not mistaken.
