try reinstalling the mouse driver
but it will most likely be hardware problem

my guess would be either the ps/2, usb port or your mouse

try plugging into different port to see if the problem persist
if u have a spare mouse, use that instead and see

im using ps/2.
it's very funny i dont think it's hardware problem.
during the freeze time, where when i don't see the cursor moving, it's as if the left click button is on. so when i move it my mouse, the "invisible cursor" is clicking things on its way, but not always. and it only freeze when it loads something a little even like browser loading.
sounds like virus, but scanned and it's clean.

try swapping rams if you have spare ones or go borrow
check your cpu temp to see if it overheats
and of coz try swapping hardisk
sign of hardisk dieing freezing and clicking noise

just cleaned the processor's fin, and install two additional fans.
yeah overheat will be the prob for most of the people but not for me. i do use needle to korek every dust out when my CPU starts to get noisy.
rams = just changed one slot not long ago, the problems starts before that.
clicking noise = yeah O.o occasionally, but i will just system restore if i heard the sound because after the sound, my PC speed will slow down by... 20- 50 times, startup 15 minutes.

reformat = no no, i know it's the most effective way but i have too many reformating since serious virus attack not long ago.

my intuition this evening told me i should get a new one before everything crashes.

temporary cuz when u reformat
u essentially moved the data to another track and the needle position at that track is empty
so it doesnt needs to point to that direction hence no clicking sound
but once u put data into that track with that faulty position
then u start hearing clicks
sometimes grinding noise if the bearing is out

but still i am guessing only
unless i phsyically see it
my advice would be swap other hardisk or borrow one to see if its true
