Added on June 22, 2009, 9:12 pm QUOTE(masrila5 @ Jun 21 2009, 11:03 AM) Hello, u r vey inspiring to people like us who are new to this field of studying.... thank you very much.. nice meeting you I'm new to this forum. It's a good forum indeed. Well, I'm almost a decade in sealife career. Currently onboard one of MISC LNG carrier anchoring outside Bintulu. There are about a bunch of big LNG carrier currently here. Although anchoring and not trading, we're still making money because of the 25 years contract. Well, back to the topic, me myself almost reaching the peak of my career still find this life at sea very challenging and exhausting. With modern shipping nowadays, seafaring is not about travelling and go shore having fun anymore. Like Midnightjive said, the money is good but not great. But it depends on ur perspective. Even milionaire still try to get more money right? But if u start from scratch, at the the peak of ur career u will have almost everything. I speak based on experience. You can have ur sport car, a bungalow, a beautiful wife with high mantenance but still manage to keep few K's in the ASB. It depends on how greed u are. The more u earned, the more u want! For those who are new to the industry, welcome! It's a long way to go but if u can survived it, it will rewarding. Frankly speaking, I also do not have a good SPM result. But I am glad I did choose this career as it is not as hard as u imagine. Truly speaking, thus far the hardest exam I took is SPM. If I choose to enter any of the uni, maybe I still jobless. Hehehehe. I'm a marine engineer officer, not a deck officer. During my junior years, there are Brit's officer and engineer onboard. And they are the one that kept bashing each other between deck and engine side. Since they left, the relationship between all dept are very good. They also the one that make we, Malaysian think seafaring is a very hard job. Believe me, if I can do it, most of you can. Yeah, deck and engine officer got different job scope. Suffice to say, deck officer bear much more responsibility than engineers although the work is not as hard. But engineers got to socialised more due to 8 to 5 working hours. And engineer always work as a team while deck officer always alone on the bridge. As for ship's, try to get into LNG fleet as this fleet is more secure than others. And it is also cleaner and safer. If you got the Bintulu - Far east route, you got to see Malaysia twice a month. And in Bintulu anchorage you still got 3G access. It's true, MISC ship don't have internet facility. For engine cadet to be, MISC only have 2 DFDE LNG career while the rest are steam powered vessels. That's all for now. Good job for starting this thread. It is a good info although some is misinfo. All the best to you who just joined the industry. This post has been edited by karisma: Jun 22 2009, 09:12 PM |

Gud Evening to all the new cadet officers who are willing to enter Akademik Laut Malaysia. All this information is depend on my own experience when i got the interview for entering alam. When you guys apply to enter alam if your results suits the requirements you will receive a mail and a phone call or either one. Basically from ALAM, MISC, AET & any other sponsoring companies. With this mail and phone call you will have to print the mail that you receive and bring it on that day.
On your interview day first you have to go through the briefing session more good if your parents around so that they will also get some knowledge about what is alam and basically about sailing.......... After the briefing you guys will have to decide whether to sit for the written exam or not... They will ask you to leave the hall if you dont want to. So listen properly during the briefing session as this tranining will be quite hard for you guys. Starts with the written exam you will have to answer questions on physics, add maths and english. For english is very easy only objectives such as on grammer and comprehensive questions. For add maths it's just normal maths question juz be prepared on log, indices, on trigonometry too and basically some problem solving. For physics changing km to tonnes that kind of unit changing questions, a littl on lights than density and juz the important parts..... In that afternoon itself you will receive the results wherether you guys pass or fail..... You have to get at least 60% above the total with that you guys will be send to a room where you need to answer the phscyometric test. So simple and easy test such as " I am willing to work in a team" " agree, disagree, strongly agree" that kind of question. If you pass, than next day you can come back for the interview.. During interview you will be asked about why you want to enter this carrier, how many ships misc owns, what is misc or what is ship, do you know how to march something like that.... Read somethings on misc berhad as well as about alam activities and programmes in alam website.... Besides you guys will be given a problem based card you have to read and as the president or head of the team you will have to give suggestions, comment on the problem and recommendations. They call it case study.. Very very easy one.. I got on Malaysian Sports. Hoe to develop malaysian sports level in the world rank..... That will end your interview. Be calm and answer all the questions wisely and if you dont know the answer juz tell dun know.. Because ones you answer something that you are not sure than they will ask more and more... Try to check your knowledge on ships and this carrier so just act smart..... Than after two week if you are qualified than they willcall you and a mail to go for medical check up. Together with your sponsors briefing. If you are ok at that medical check up than you will be given the contract as well as offer letter from ALAM. Added on January 25, 2010, 10:08 pmI am a student in ALAM nw... Currently in ALAM doing Nautical Studies. Of course if you guys get through all this things you will see me in ALAM as your senior... There's many things about alam that you guys need to know... For time being the information that i provided is good enough tomorrow i will update more bout alam and the carrier. This year is a bit diffrent you guys got foundation programme for the first 6 months which is good so that you all won't be lost when you start your real course.... Hope to see you guys there.... Gud luck to all of you and may god bless you all.... especially for girls think before entering this carrier and don't ever regret after entering as this is dominated by male only.... As a female I have gone thorugh it and I know the pain and feeling of a girl when you guys are in ALAM.. But don't wory you will be used to it... Just enter ALAM it's agolden oppurtunity and rewarding carrier as well big money waitin for you ppl... Thanks again and gud luck to all This post has been edited by karisma: Jan 25 2010, 10:08 PM |
