The Inter-University Psychometric Entrance Test is a tool for predicting academic performance, and it is used for selecting applicants to institutes of higher learning . When these institutes are unable to admit all applicants, they select those who are most likely to successfully complete their studies. The Psychometric Entrance Test is one way of measuring academic potential. This test enables all applicants to be ranked on a uniform scale and, relative to other selection tools, is less affected by the different background of each applicant or other subjective factors. (The matriculation scores, for example, are based, among other things, on teacher evaluations. Since students are not all evaluated by the same teachers, it is obvious that the various scores cannot be on the same exact scale, and are affected by many different variables.)

There is a large body of research indicating that the Psychometric Entrance Test has a high predictive ability. This means that students with high Psychometric Test scores generally do better in their studies than students with low scores. In addition, of all the different combinations of the available selection tools, the combination of the Psychometric Entrance Test and the Matriculation Exams has proved to have the best predictive ability. As a result, most institutes of higher learning in Israel use this combination for selecting applicants.

The Psychometric Entrance Test is not a perfect selection tool. While it is able to predict academic success in most cases, there are always exceptions. There may be some people who do not do well on the test and yet are very successful in their studies and vice versa. In addition, the test does not directly measure such factors as creativity, diligence and motivation, which are definitely related to academic success. Nevertheless, it should be noted that some of these elements are measured indirectly, both on the Psychometric Test and also on the Matriculation Exams; thus the final score for selection purposes takes these factors into account to a certain extent. In addition, the results of many studies of the effectiveness of different selection tools indicate that the Psychometric Entrance Test, combined with matriculation scores, is the best and fairest selection tool available at present

Nautical Studies

Seamanship is the art of operating a ship or boat.

It involves a knowledge of a variety of topics and development of specialised skills including: navigation and international maritime law; weather, meteorology and forecasting; watchstanding; ship-handling and small boat handling; operation of deck equipment, anchors and cables; ropework and line handling; communications; sailing; engines; execution of evolutions such as towing; cargo handling equipment, dangerous cargoes and cargo storage; dealing with emergencies; survival at sea and search and rescue; fire fighting.

The degree of knowledge needed within these areas is dependent upon the nature of the work and the type of vessel employed by a mariner. However, the practice of good seamanship should be the goal of all.


Marine Engineering

Marine Engineering involves the design, construction, installation, operation and support of the systems and equipment which propel and control marine vehicles, and of the systems which make a vehicle or structure habitable for crew, passengers and cargo.[1]

Marine Engineering is allied to mechanical engineering, although the modern marine engineer requires knowledge (and hands on experience) with electrical, electronic, pneumatic, hydraulic, chemistry, control engineering, naval architecture or ship design, process engineering,steam generations gas turbines and even nuclear technology on certain military vessels.

Marine Engineering on board a ship refers to the operation and maintenance of the propulsion and other systems such as: electrical power generation plant; lighting; air conditioning; refrigeration; and water systems on board the vessel. This work is carried out by Marine Engineering Officers, who usually train via cadetships sponsored by a variety of Maritime organisations.

Marine engineering also embraces other areas such as Autonomous Underwater Vehicle research; Marine renewable energy research; and careers related to the Offshore extractive and infrastructure (Cable Laying) industries.
