The New York Times have published an article titles "The Year of the Simpler Gadget" on 20 Dec 08.

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/12/21/business...=1&ref=business

The article has tried to explain Wii sensation in the US.
Avid gamers will noticed that there is some error in the articles,
Nevertheless the article summarized the market sentiment really well.

The article argue that consumers have shunned complicated and expensive gadgets
for affordable and simpler one.
Look at how the market abandon PS3 for Wii this year,
and how expensive SUVs sales tanked, while cheaper fuel efficient cars sold in loads.
You will see a trend here.

What is your view?
Discussion encouraged.

P/S
To the Fanboys that wanted to call this article "Bullshit" and start flaming,
please note that "The New York Times" is "THE" newspaper, beacon of great journalism.
If they are talking "Bullshit", your game magazine is "truckload of Dinosaur shit".

Next year will be PS3's year, no point arguing any further. PS3 is a god machine. While 360 and Wii run on electric power, the PS3 runs on faith.

NYT? Nah, we should be reading Utusan Malaysia for the most accurate information

Seriously, I haven't seen any console that needed so much faith to survive. 'Next year will be PS3 year' has become a motto for Sony and fanboys since 2006.

But seriously, I don't really agree with 'simpler gadget', it's more like 'cheaper gadget'. Everyone like to have high tech gadgets, or else it would defeat the purpose for gadgets in the first place. But with the current state of economy people are willing to settle for cheaper gadgets.

Yes.... PS3 is a piece of beautiful, powerful and well crafted console.
Just that it is simply too expensive for the general consumers.
It now required massive faith for it to survive.... has it become today's 3DO?

When something is Cheap, u know, chances are they are simpler... smile.gif
And Cheap stuffs are what required of this difficult times.
Nintendo hit a jackpot with Wii,
ASUS hit jackpot with Eee PC.

Chip making business is just a small part of IBM.
IBM share price hardly drop even when Apple dump
PowerPC chip for intel's one.

IBM make bulks of their monies from Service, enterprise software,
and to a lesser extent high end servers.

Guys willing to spend lots on a single item they want.

Girls are willing to spend lots for items that's cheap.

Undeniable fact.

True.
And girls went crazy when they see Oprah Winfrey standing on that WiiFit,
or when Nicole Kidman playing a DS.

Clever marketing. I wonder why don't SONY get Sarah Palin to play Killzone 2,
it will send at least 42% of American flock out to buy a PS3. You betcha!

doesn't work that way anymore, sony ps3 is so undeniably hardcore that you can't even get the coolest celebrity to endorse your product without looking like a geek. whistling.gif

Har?? But Sarah Palin is the sexiest hottest Politician that go HUNTING, kill animals,
and drive big truck up in Alaska wor....
(Although she lost the presidential election)

Even that won't save PS3 in your opinion?
