I've always been extremely particular about the cologne I choose to buy. Because of that, I subscribe to the rule of one main cologne and supplementary ones for different settings. I have been using L'eau D'issey pour Homme (Issey Miyake) for a few years now as my main all purpose cologne. That means I'll always have at least one bottle of it. I find that it does well pretty much wherever I go and it lasts throughout the day. It is not too heavy and the scent while out of the bottle may seem a bit too fresh for some, can die down into a masculine smoky aroma. This makes it suitable for day and night in my opinion. Most importantly is that it works well with my natural body scent and I like it.
I have a few supplement colognes that I purchase in random cycles. I wear these depending on different occasions. These include Tommy (Tommy Hilfiger), Givenchy pour Homme, Hugo (Hugo Boss) and a few others.
A good resource to start looking for potential scents to try is www.basenotes.net . I've been using that since forever. What I usually do is I pick out scents I find interesting and I'll write out a small list to bring to the store for testing when I decide to make a new purchase. Basenotes also has some fantastic articles on scents like how to layer, etc.
