Utility packs only add bulk to the registry, and they slow down your system in the long run. Stick to your Windows basic defrag / scandisk and a good antivirus. That alone is more than enough.

all in all.. it depends on u to manage ur pc.
as long as u dont install unnecessary bloatware, be careful while surfing the net from any (X)ware/bug. ur pc will perform.

and bare in mind, stock pentium 4 wont perform like core2dua proc..
so be satisfied with ur machine, or invest more tongue.gif

If you are running XP, 3 things you can do to help your PC.

1. Defragment your HD.

2. Defragment your registry.

3. Run Hijackthis to check for malware.

Not really. Not all utilities add bulks to the registry. For example, CCleaner which didn't even use the registry, but helps cleanup the registry, thus can improves the registry access for Windows. Windows basic defrag / scandisk aren't enough, especially when you install/uninstall alot which keeps the bad things inside your registry/temp folder...

tuneup utilities is the best so far, but it is not freeware
as well as perfect disk 2008 for disk defragmentation,

for freeware, u can try ccleaner, it is enough for moderate user
it is manually launched and not memory hog nor registry addon

Story not ended. tongue.gif NIS '09 uses less resources than ESET. icon_idea.gif I've tried it myself and resource usage was verified by Task Manager.
