Finding it interesting that people are will to buy a Lock 3G iPhone. Even tho there's a 3G unlock software available soon, do you think is advisable for people to buy? hmm.gif
DevTeam 3G Unlock software is not proven 100% till someone whose willing to take the risk. sweat.gif sweat.gif

Lock and Unlock iPhone Apple reference site:- http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1937

What are the pros and cons of an Locked 3G iPhone?

Countries with Lock 3G iPhones:- USA, UK, Canada, Brazil, India, Japan, Philippines, Sweden and others.

Pros - Cheap!!!!

Cons
a) Use turbosim. gevey sim and others for phone to work.
b) Updating future firmware will be a constant MEGA problem and DevTeam took 5 months to come up with a 3G unlocking method and latest firmware still have to wait. If you don't mind the wait, then wait lor. shakehead.gif shakehead.gif
Also, you may have a software to unlock firmware 2.0.0 - 2.2 baseband but how about the next baseband update? Wait again for unlock software???? blink.gif
c) Drop calls, 3G connection fail, sudden network lost.
d) Insert sim into another phone, it will still shows no network. Have to search network manually, then insert back to iPhone3G to get it work.
e) At times no service.
f) Need to remove simcard if want to sync with macbook. If simcard and sim adapter inside, it shows error.
g) Activate 3G will not able receive call and other issues.
*Even with yellowsn0w available, every firmware updates need to be unlock and you always have to wait for an unlock patch all the time to unlock your firmware.

What are the pros and cons of an Official UnLocked 3G iPhone?

Official Countries with Unlock 3G iPhones:- Belgium, Czech Republic, Greece, Hong Kong, Italy, Luxembourg, Macau, New Zealand, Russia, Singapore, South Africa, Turkey, Taiwan, Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates (Dubai etc)

Pros
a) Works out of the box.
b) Insert simcard and activate v iTunes and start using phone for calls, sms, Wifi, 3G to those who subscribed etc.
c) No worries at all on future firmware updates from Apple. Such peace of mind. thumbup.gif thumbup.gif
d) Warranty. Exchange for a brand new 3G iPhone when is faulty. icon_rolleyes.gif
e) Works with Maxis, DiGi, Celcom and UMobile.

Cons - Slight expensive but worth every penny.

So, decide what you think best. Post your comments.....

Why some say is cheap because they buy it roughly for RM 2000+ to 2200 (UK,US etc) for a Locked 8/16GB 3G iPhone unit ma.

My colleague at my workplace own a locked 3G Iphone, US set. So one day, just a day after Apple release the update for 2.2 Fw, after find out me successfully updated my Iphone 3G to 2.2 (mine is unlocked Singtel set), he also want to update. Because on that time no one has no idea what will happen to a locked Iphone 3G after updating, so I just let him update his Iphone.

But sadly, after succesfully updated to 2.2, no line captured........... cry.gif
Because his turbo sim only support up to 2.1. He is now currently finding turbo sim that can support 2.2, which is already on sale all over the internet and also maybe on LYN. He also cannot unlock his 3G Iphone using DevTeam's will-release unlock method software this New Year's Eve as his Iphone's baseband already updated to 02.28.

He is currently borrowing his son standard handphone.

Moral of the story? Buy unlocked set! rclxms.gif

Cheers.

Just read what Stringfellow posted earlier today concerning Australia 3G iPhones.

Seaedge: one problem guys.. one of my friend's australian set unlocked, then update to 2.2, and now is locked back. does it happen that way?

Stringfellow: This was reported earlier on via Macrumors, that some of the iPhones that are unlocked via unlock codes from telco carriers gets locked back. The best solution is to tell your friend to inform the Australian telco that he had bought the phone from to again forward the unlock codes via iTunes again. Otherwise, they may want you to bring it in so that they can do that again.

This is the reason why Australian iPhones are not high on my preferred list. Having to retrace your unlocking history with a telco is troublesome to say the least.

I would think so too but when the next firmware comes out how???

Wait for another 6 months before DevTeam release unlock for upgrading the firmware ah?

So troublesome laa..why spend so much money to have firmware upgrade trouble when can safely enjoy every firmware upgrade and all the goodies rite with an UNLOCK unit.

MuscleNerd : It runs directly on the iPhone...it doesn't use Windows or OS X.

Hmmm..Devteam gonna port yellowsn0w to Cydia. Imagine new years eve..hahahhaha..sure gila..

It's not software la. It's a patch and you download from Cydia on 31/12 and it does the unlock for Lock 3G iPhones with firmware 2.1 and lower.

hehe, i second that... biggrin.gif its really pain to upgrade when new firmware comes out for those who have locked 3g iphone, but what to do, the reason they chose it because its slightly cheaper than the official unlocked but as people say,

Its their choice if they prefer it cheaper. It comes with more 'hassle' to upgrade in future,
but hey... just that they are going to be able to use their "cheaper locked iphone" like yours... you dont have to always remind them of it... it begins to sound like you are upset u paid more...

btw.... nope... i dont own any iphone...

either lock or unlock got some advantage....
some ppl prefer cost over comfort, some prefer comfort over cost....
very subjective matter.... most of us like both... but reality in iphone it is almost impossble to have both....
but lucky me.... i got both....

If you get iPhone from Australia, Optus unlocks it very easily for you and Vodafone charges AUS$25 to have it unlocked.

Why still want to use jailbreak devices now?

I'm staying in NZ and I can get my hands on the phones easily. Officially unlocked phones are awesome. So if anyone is interested, we can find a way to deal, that way you can sponsor a few % towards my own iphone cost if you dont mind .. smile.gif
