QUOTE Rumor: EA Sending Need for Speed to Junkyard
The Electric Playground's show on Friday reported that Electronic Arts has cancelled development of new titles in its Need for Speed franchise. An EA spokesman gave a generic response that did not dispel the rumor. Electronic Playground did not name its source. Reached for comment, EA said: "We're working through a process on people, products, and facilities at EA and don't have any announcements today." That's no defense for a franchise that goes back to 1994, so, it sounds like something's up. Need for Speed: Undercover released to very unenthusiastic reviews, to put it charitably. It was one of the titles named by analysts in this week's news that holiday sales would be sharply lower than expected, news that sent the publisher's stock into a dive. EA CEO John Riccitello said the company would cut titles from its "bottom levels of profitability," which exempts EA's sports catalogue. EA-owned Black Box Studios is the home of NFS. But it also develops FIFA, NBA Live, NHL and others for EA. Correction, that is EA Canada. EA Black Box makes Need for Speed and Skate. Killing NFS would be a serious blow. Source I have yet to play NFS: Undercover, but I heard its not so good... What EA needs to do is not try to fix it if it isnt broken! Most Wanted was fantastic, I dont understand why they changed the formula from then on... Their games were generally downhill from then on... Its not that they cant do it, but somehow, they just seem to f*** it up... Carbon, for example, was horrible!

According to Gamespot (2008), Black Box's staff is also being shaved away due to economic concerns.
dammit, my research mode is still on. Anyways, even after 2 years that the community has given to Black Box, they still managed to really screw NFS up. And here we all were hoping for another Most Wanted, which totally rocks in terms of style, difficulty, and every single other thing thrown into.
This needs to be scraped.

NFS series always on top of things... they were always being the best racing games... developers ran out of ideas, perhaps??? they churned out generic racing games...

Easy. Bring back the good old NFS to it's original glory times . Exotic cars (Ferrari, Lambogini, porsche, etc), racing alongside beach roads, mountains, you know, the old NFS1-4 days? I don't quite fancy this japanese performance cars with modification/undercover/fast n furious stuff, it's getting old lah. Just my 2 cents!

and i thought the new NFS is Need For Speed: Junkyard well...send it directly to junkyard is a reckless move...they should put the NFS francise into "ON Hold" status for the series to take a break. Most Wanted it the last best NFS francise i've ever play and i didnt even touch NFS game after that...it seem it just lost it sting

Back then, NFS and NFS2 was the best arcade racer on the PC. There was no beating it. When it came to the PS1, it still ruled with Hot Pursuit and High Stakes.
Hot Pursuit 2 was one of the pioneer arcade racers during the early life of the PS2, but it was clear that things are starting to get a little bit stale.
NFS: Underground was the changing phenomenon. It brought car cuztomisation into a new level and it brought in many "tuner-wannabes" into the racing realm. The amount of sales NFS: Underground generated was insane(considering it is also one of the most pirated games ever)
Underground 2.... utter dissapointment. The open-end world was stupid IMO and the races were just not good enough already. Its less intense.
Then came Most Wanted, which did brought the series back to its roots. Police chases were back and Most Wanted was actually a pretty damn good game, although it did get repetitive after a while.
After that, the entire NFS series has just taken the shitter... Carbon blows, Prostreet was utter trash and Undercover.... jeez...
So yea, I'm somewhat happy to see the NFS series take the cann. I'm sick and tired of it....

QUOTE We've received a tip from someone a purported EA employ who wishes to remain anonymous. According to this source, the Need for Speed series isn't shutting down -- but EA Black Box, the development team behind recent entries into the series, "most likely" is. The source explains that EA not only scrapped their plans to open up a new studio in Vancouver, but that they also decided to close Black Box, moving the NFS and Skate teams to their much larger Burnaby studios.
The source further details the fate of Need for Speed -- he claims that one of the next entries into the series will be developed by the EA-owned Criterion Games, and will likely use the engine of their racing series, Burnout. He also claims that there are three different teams within Black Box that are responsible for developing Need for Speed titles (which is how they're able to release a new NFS title every year) -- though these three teams will likely consolidate into one, leading to less NFS releases, more continuity between said releases, and, ultimately, drastic downsizing for the NFS teams.
