Hai, just want to contribute some about Sumatera Utara.

Medan?
Not much tourism activity here. Only crowded city, dirty, some people are rude, and etc. Not recommended as a place to stay. Don't spend your time here to find any tourism attraction. Many Malaysian comes to Medan (mostly Puan2, Makcik2) just to go to Pasar Ikan Lama, or Sentral Medan to buy some Muslim Clothes. The only tourism attraction in Medan, I think the culinary only. You can eat very good DIM SUM at Nelayan Rstaurant or Jala-Jala (Non Halal). You can hang-out at Merdeka Walk. If you like street food, you can go to Kampung Keling, there is a place call PAGARUYUNG that serve a lot of street food. Or you can go to Jalan Dr. Mansur (Near Universitas Sumatera Utara), so many places to eat but more like a cafe. Oh one more thing, you must eat KERANG REBUS in Medan. Very recomended!!!

If you go to Danau Toba, right now there is not much to do. Not like 10 years ago when the tourism in Lake Toba very "happening". (the old times there were banana boat, parasailing, jet ski, "sepeda bebek", horse riding around the lake. Today, I'm not sure this kind activity still exist.)
But, Lake Toba still worth to be visited for people who love to spend their time relaxing with the damn beautiful view of nature.
Secret, little tips. If you rent the ferry, you can ask the "driver" to bring you to a place (cafe-like) that served "shit-mushroom". (Mushroom that can make you FLY, hahaha).
One more, if you like BURUNG PUYUH, you can ask your guide to bring you to any restaurant in PEMATANG SIANTAR (1 hour from Parapat, usually route to Lake Toba will through this city, except you take the Berastagi route.)

Berastagi?
Now, this place currently is happening there even with the local people. So many tourism attraction.
- There are two small theme park; Greencity Hillpark and Miki Holoday (here, Taiwanese, Korean boy band and singer usually have concert).
- Sidebudebu. Hot Spring. Nice to get relax. still very traditional. If you like mount climbing, you can climb the SIBAYAK Mount. You can reach the flat surface (ex-eruption volcano, we used to call it the "kuali" on top the mountain, but not the peak) only 4 hours for going up and back down.
- In Berastagi itself, you can enjoy horse riding.
- If you take the route Medan-Berastagi-Parapat-Lake Toba you ask your guide to transit in place named "SIMALEM RESORT". You can get awesome view of Lake Toba there.

What else ya? humm. Just asked, i will help you to provide information as long as i know.

Answering the above question. Pick pocket, cons, snatch thief? Can't say this. Pick pocket you can meet them on ANGKOT or SUDAKO (public transport), or maybe on PASAR. Some people are rude, and mostly you will meet people who cannot speak english, so just use your malay language there.

To sum up, Medan is not recommended to stay, but still worth it to spend your time there. Lake Toba and Berastagi are very good to get relax and very worth to be visited. But you have to face a very bad road condition to reach those place.

Hope this can be useful.
