That laptop is supposed to run Windows Vista and not Windows XP. Therefore, certain drivers may not work. Please download and install official drivers for that laptop from official Compaq download website for Compaq CQ40 115AU here. [Out of Topic] Did you copy and paste that question from another source because when I quoted it, it's all out of format. Edit: Unquoted. Also, I'd recommend that you install Vista on it to avoid complications as the drivers provided @ only for Vista (32/64-Bit).

Please don't go against the trend and use XP. Only business notebooks get support for XP nowadays.
I'm not saying Vista is the best. You have a choice, you can always use Linux.

You have a choice, you can always use Linux. Some people can't get used to Linux interface. So far, I'm using a Mac (Linux based) on my MacBook and spare-booting Ubuntu. After using Ubuntu (for donkey years) I still can't get used to it. However, I got used to my Mac OS X in a week.

Actually, I doubt that drivers have a reason with booting into XP after a fresh install because none of the drivers have been installed yet.
