It is always best to download the updates and install independently. Just bookmark Apple's Download Support page and download the updaters from there. I never ran into any installation problems that way.

I usually use Software Update to check for updates, then download from the Support page and install independently.

Anyway, running XP or Vista depends on your system, lower spec would run XP better, higher spec would run Vista well.

Ps: Just ask if you are not getting your answers, bumping it like you did is not proper I think. And even better if you combine your questions in one post.

I think it's safe to say with enough RAM (like 4GB), Vista should run smoothly.

Funny, I have no problems playing .mkv movie files with VLC.
