QUOTE(tandoori @ Jan 8 2009, 01:48 AM) Been using a late '08 MBP, 2.4ghz 2gb ram 256 9400M / 9600GT. Thanks for the review. i got my new macbook few weeks ago, yes i loving it so far My honest review: Battery: 4/5 On a full charge, with bluetooth off, backlight at 30%, and running on the 9400M, battery can hit up to 5 hours - 6 hours depending on what you're doing. Surfing with some light documentation, 5 hours + fosho. With youtube and heavily flashed sites 4-5 hours. *Note: My old Macbook White lasted 6 hours on a full charge, with similar settings. Performance: This notebook IS NOT a desktop replacement, so I'm reviewing from a laptop POV. Processor:4/5 I use Adobe CS, and Textmate for work. Heavy graphics, photoshop, flash, premiere, after effects and css/html. The c2d handles everything pretty much well from this aspect with little complaints from me. Graphics:3.5/5(9400M) 4.5/5(9600GT) In case you're wondering why there are two different scores, the mbp ships with two different processors, performance vary greatly from each. Now, if I'm sitting in starbucks, just doing surfing and some web design (photoshop / 2d apps), the 9400M is the way to go. For heavy graphical apps or 3D apps I'd switch to the 9600GT. Major difference here is the Power/Battery consumption, turn on the 9600GT and you'd drain your battery nearly 1-1.5 hours faster compared to the 9400M. Gaming: 4/5 (Tested on the 9600GT) I've installed XP, ran some games on it (its a notebook, so expect what you might from one). I rarely game on my work lappie, but what the heck. CoD5 ran flawlessly hitting 40-70 frames with little problem(Settings: All maxed out, 1280x800). RA3 Ran with no problems with similar settings. And so did Prince of Persia (late '08). RAM: 5/5 Coming from an upgrade from 667 to 1066, the performance hit on app loading and boot-up was tremendous. Loading times halved comparatively to the older macbook. Brilliant move by apple. Screen: 4.5/5 I use a matte screen for work / graphics. The shiny 15.4 inch screen takes a lil getting used to. And sometimes, more often than not, appears to be TOO shiny. Just an acquired taste. Pictures and games look absolutely brilliant on it though. Price / Performance: 3/5 If you all haven't noticed, getting a mac is kinda like buying a pair of Levi's. Well, sorta. Its sleek, well made, sturdy and turns heads. So, if you're looking for a "bang for the buck notebook", I'd suggest getting an acer Keyboard/Trackpad: 5/5 I waited for Apple to release a MBP with the keyboard of the '06 Macbook. And guess what? They did. Typing on this machine is a joy. Carefully designed and spaced keys with a satisfying click; it's finger-candy. It took me a good week to get used to the multi-gesture/touch trackpad. Its glass, smooth, and large with no buttons (other than the fact that the whole thing is a pivoted button). A joy to use, and you'd never go back using another trackpad. Ever. Final Verdict: Buy/Wish-List Its a brilliant notebook computer with much to offer, OSX and Windows, looks absolutely awesome and fully featured. The selling point's of this notebook would be its dual graphics cards, keyboard, screen and trackpad. A slim and beautiful machine with horsepower under its hood. For 7.2 grand, its a pretty hefty price to pay for a notebook. But after having used it for a couple weeks now, its a notebook I'd use for some years to come. Can i ask you how to change between 9400M and 9600GT? My fully charged battery can online at least say 3 hours |
