My setup :-

Intel C2Q QX9650
Xigmatek Achilles
Biostar TPower I45
Crucial Ballistix 1GB x 4
ATI Radeon 3850
Thermaltake Toughpower 750w
Gigabyte 3D Aurora 570

Below are the pictures comparing each step for every grade of sandpaper used...

These are the temp shots....

Before lapping:-

After lapping:-

From the temp shots you can see that the whole process of dismantling, lapping and assembling takes about 4 hours.....

This job cost me RM21 worth of sandpaper (from MidValley Ace Hardware), lots of paper towel, RM2.90 worth of tape, some dish washer and swollen fingers but its worth the trouble, temps are lower by 5-7 degrees on load!!

Now I might just be able to push it another 200Mhz to 4Ghz......

That's what I heard too....HDT cannot lap but I figured I wont be able to take too much thickness off and Xigmatek wont make such thin pipes so I gave it a shot.

I'm using Artic Silver 5

Respect the effort you put in TS and deservedly you get satisfactory results. Unfortunately for me, aroudn my place the finest they have is 1500 grit and all the guides i read they use 2000 as finisher. so sad.gif

If you cant find 2000 grit paper then i guess 1500 is good enough too, seen some ppl use 1600 as finisher, just have to keep sanding on the final grade

To those who's attempting to lap HDT based, do bare in mind the limits of it. U do not want to lap till the inner part of the HDT tube is exposed doh.gif

I was just checking out your temps and noticed the huge temp spread between your 4 cores.

Before lapping, there is a 21 deg difference core 0 and core 3.

After lapping, the difference is 24 deg.

Shouldn't this be a cause of concern?

On my pc's I get at the most 7 deg spread.

Yes, I want to know also how come this occur, some people on the net experience this too but mine seems to be a bit extreme!!

I tried lapping(1500grit adhesive paper) Intel stock heatsink just now. No special method used, I just applied some water and lap it... Surface wasn't as reflective as imagined.
