This year's 24th issue of Square Enix's Young Gangan magazine will reportedly announce on Friday that a television anime adaptation of Ritz Kobayashi's Saki mahjong manga has been green-lit for 2009. The magazine had already indicated that there would be an "important announcement" in the next issue. The story centers around Saki Miyanaga, a timid freshman girl who has never enjoyed the Asian tile game of mahjong. However, another freshman brings her into their high school's mahjong club and into the competitive world of mahjong tournaments. Square Enix posted a free preview of the manga online. Four compiled volumes of the manga have been published since it began in 2006 in Japan.
Manabu Ono (Dragonaut - The Resonance, Transformers: Cybertron) will direct, and Tatsuhiko Urahata (Card Captor Sakura, Hajime no Ippo, Strawberry Panic!) wil be in charge of scripts. Masakatsu Sasaki (Erotic Torture Chamber) will design the characters and oversee the animators at Gonzo. Studio Easter's Hiroki Matsumoto (Itazura na Kiss, Shikabane Hime: Aka, Welcome to the NHK) will design and supervise the background art. Sanzigen will produce the 3D animation, while Yota Tsuruoka (Air, Clannad, ef - a tale of memories) will direct the sound.
http://www.saki-anime.com/ Lets hope gonzo wont add excessive bust to all of em, or most importantly screw this up.
the cast Kana Ueda: Saki Miyanaga (the one with mahjong tile at top pic) Ami Koshimizu: Nodoka Haramura (pink haired) Rie Kugimiya: Yūki Kataoka (Tacos girl) Ryoko Shiraishi: Mako Someya (megane-ko) Shizuka Itou: Hisa Takei (the one the the furthest back) Jun Fukuyama: Kyōtarō Suga (not in pic, a guy, not important neway )
so horo n lawrence is thar (or lulu n Kallen if u prefer), wilhelmina n shana is thar.... watever.
maid cafe? u can even have maid mahjong parlor.

it seem Gonzo in really big pinch n i really can see what they really emphasis on. ecchiness, nodoka's bewbs (which also got bigger), n try their best on low angle shot.
I actually understand enough about mahjong to follow the rules, even if I get confused at times due to the terminology in Japanese, but this show just doesn't make me feel like watching it. And pink haired loli's bewbs are way too big for her body.
this is..a mahjong anime..the opening was extremely hyperbole -.-" electric white putting down the majhong piece..suddenly they were fighting with sword and spear.. -.-"
Lolz .. the japanese styled mahjong in this anime is really difficult to understand. Saki seems to always get the right tiles all the time :/
Simple just read up on japanese mahjiong rules even though I play 4 player mah jong and some mainland chinese rules I still do not understand what it means just have to read up in forums and japanese mahjong rules.
fufu just watched the 9th episode. it seems they showed up a little bit of tactics in mahjong here and there (so that its not simply someone like Saki always getting advantageous tiles).

I think if some 1 can do that even the best strategy in mahjong cant beat that person.
Lols those strategy was possible was only because the ryumonbuchi and kazekoshi girls had SUPERHUMAN powers. I think if they were playing for money .. Calling a Pung instead of a Kong was really a no brainer.
Not really this game sometimes you have to look at the big picture its better to let some 1 with small cards to win than big cards and kong might let ur oponent win so it all depends.
Well I have not seen that eps so I cant really commend on the situation.
Looks slightly different from the usual Mahjong i know.
Yes, but I mentioned that I played mahjong with mainland chinese mix rules and that have some similarities to it. Like we recognize 7 pair mahjong to win 3 colored mix without honors tiles.

malaysian chinese mahjong is different from japanese mahjong only in term of points calculation other than that...the playing rules doesnt change much
I think Japanese mahjong is have more rules to calculate points like rinshanten, richi, just to name the 2, I do not think we have that in malaysian/ hong kong mahjong. I think these rules might be more fun since it will involve more strategies in it.
anybody know any decent understandable english game of japanese mahjong to play on pc? that even tell you what kinda thing like in anime such ron or whatever. you know la not the pick 2 same tiles then it dissappear type la
edit: oh never mind. i found out super real mahjong series with anime hentai in it if you win but its japanese

Wow.. anyone watch episode 18 yet.. Superb play by Saki... its as if godlike as it can even beat Koromo Bottomless Ocean as she make her eat with Conceal Yakuman. ^^ .
Watch episode 19 already. Now there is 6 more episode to go.
Are they going to cram all the individual competition into that remaining episode or there will be filler episode while the individual competition will be in the next season.
Unless you play japanese style mah jiong its definately not the same even within china there are maybe bout 20 styles of mahjiong and taiwanese plays with 16 tiles.
I nixed watching this in favour of K-On. After K-On finished, I decided to give it a go because I definitely did not want to spend my time watching Endless Eight (lol). I'm no big fan of any gambling-related games, so this anime wasn't anywhere high on my to-watch list. The first few episodes... entertained me in the same manner Hikaru No Go makes placing monochrome circles as fun as Starcraft. But it was the tournament episodes that really got the ship moving.
I was actually motivated enough to read a bit on riichi mahjong rules and try playing (this flash-based riichi mahjong game was recommended by some anime boards). So from someone with with zero knowledge, I slowly went through the ropes and after a month I managed to do my first rinshan kaihou... ... which also happened to be my first yakuman win. Now I can totally relate with the euphoria you get when you manage to do this. It's an incredible moment of awesome. Just to share how much damage a yakuman deals, here's the total score for the game: All those losses mean nothing, hah!
Anyway, seems like the anime will end before the nationals start. Hopefully the second season will be as captivating as this one.

so hard to play LOL, keep lose must we remember all the sequence before play?
Why Saki is so awesome? Because it has girls, mahjong, cool effect and awesome impact background music. Try listening to the soundtrack ( by Watanabe Tsuyoshi ).
its abit like hong kong mahjong and taiwan mahjong anyways this is the prequel of season 1, so obviously the characters from secondary school wont appear

Hope they don't do it like 1 ep per month.
I heard the manga already done the quarter final for side B. Now,they are in semifinal and since Ritz already done Achiga manga, she can now focus on Kiyosumi, hopefully the pace will start picking up.I really hope they show semi final for Zenkoku seeing how they already spoil non manga reader including myself of the quarter final result at the end of Saki Achiga episode 16.

Nono, i mean Anime Shrine Japan trip, might follow if my parents allow lol. Got enough money edi.
Side B is the Kiyosumi part? I thought Zenkoku Hen will only be the finals On second thoughts, yea it'll be too short if that's the case.
Can't choose between Kiyosumi and Achiga. Who do you want to be the winner?
Gt lah, who say main character must always win d. As long as she makes it up with Teru can edi lah, let Shizu win better lah, Shizu's team more kawaii girls, makes my heart go dokidoki

In no particular order,
Yuu, Ako, Kuro, Mihoko, Ryuuka....(some forgot edi, too many names @.@)
Now you can see why i support Achiga that much.
Side note: Nodoka's boobs too big, getting out of place.
I haven't read the manga yet but I saw one if the characters from the national,Iwato Kasumi got a very big tits. Not sure whose bigger,Nodoka or Kasumi.

Dafuq, not my cup of tea.
Anyway, I suppose Kiyosumi will win, since Achiga already achieved their aim of getting into the finals (for Akado sensei) and playing against Nodoka.
You're really keen on Saki. Though I must say that Yoshino's a pretty place. Shud visit it if I have the chance.
Well, someone from myanimelist forum mention the location.
But to be honest, even before someone mention it in myanimelist, I keep getting a feeling that the places from Achiga is some sort of potential tourist destinations. I don't get this feeling when I watch the original Saki. There just something special about Achiga place and turn out my instinct is correct.

Anything aired on animes will instantly become tourist spot for otakus. Just look at Ooarai lolz.
But yeah, Achiga should have been pretty popular even before the anime. Just look at the yamas with sakura trees. It's simply gorgeous. I wouldn't mind living there.
btw want convenient power just play both Saki Portable and Achiga Hen Portable. Such as when you play as Toki, you will know what tile you will draw next. It not necessarily makes gameplay easier though

Here some advice to increase your mahjong power.
1. Try eat tacos before every single game to power you up 2. Hug a penguin doll while playing mahjong,I heard it give you more luck 3. If you are wearing sock while playing mahjong, take it off. Sock decrease your power.
