Hi All,

As topic, my father plan to purchase a volvo 850. currently, he's looking around town at available 2nd hand dealer that have this car. I only know that this car manufactured from 1992-1997. And the one my father eyeing right is year 1997 with price RM 15800. Is this a good offer? Its Kinda hard to find info about this car. So, i'm asking help from the forumer here, if any of you guys have driven this car/ have this car at home? And is it worth to buy this car? notworthy.gif

Really appreciate if you guys can give Any info on the car the car displacement, FC, reliability, ride & handling, maintenance and so on. Thanks smile.gif .

ride in one in 98.. interior was comfortable depending on the previous owner.. tat time it was new so everything was allright.. but i think when it comes to FC, its not so good cuz tis car is 2.5L.. maintainance might be lil bit costly.. i would say that volvo S70 is better in terms of look n production was between 97-00.. it has 2.0L too.. smile.gif

All volvo are build like a tank and very solid.

But I can tell you the fuel guzzling engine will kill you.Its either 2 litre or 2.5 Litre turbo.

Just make sure the auto transmission is working fine.Changing one will burnt a very big hole on your pocket.

I'm also eyeing this car since the price is so cheap. It's actually either 2.4L or 2.3L Turbo. What i see on motortrader or mudah are the GLE models which is the 2.4L 168HP version.

Refer wiki for more details.

Dad has one 850 2.3l se(stockholm ed, something like that).
The power is ok, not that great, not ttoo sure bout the fuel as i never use it for long period.
But one thing for volvo, the interior will deteriorate with our climate, especially parts that uses glue sweat.gif
Well, at least you're driving a comfortable tank tongue.gif

my dad own volvo 850 n S70, great car, but i must admit 240 series comfortable than 850/S series.
850/S series comfort certain area, like highway.

better take S70 2.0 T. more fuel saver than 2.5 engine.both 5 cylinders
reach 220km/h easy and steady.

but prepare for the maintenance, sometimes more expensive than merc/bmw parts

OT:
for me better drive 220km/h on volvo than vios laugh.gif

240 series more comfortable than newer volvo? sweat.gif

I dont quite like the 850 interior, looks old already shakehead.gif . BTW, spare parts for volvo, is it easy to find? The truth is, I haven't seem 850 on the road for quite a long time! just 940.

Well, if you say so nod.gif Never sit & ride on volvo before, so quite surprised when you say 240 (late 80s car) more confortable.

s70 is the successor to 850? what is second value now? notworthy.gif

S70 got two version, 2nd value now can get RM30-45K, 45K = excellent condition.
850 around rm18-23K.depend on condition.
1st version using 2.5 engine same like 850 engine, 2nd version new engine using 2.0T (light Turbo)
but this turbo save fuel+performance just like 2.5 engine.

but be careful about volvo electronic throttle, my uncle change it, cost RM8K for that part:sweat:

850 is a good solid ride.. but...

- should be 10 years old.. or more..
- FC surely would be higher... if compare wit S70 or S80..
- ride n drive quality... volvo quality assured (my uncle's 240...still very good..even more than 15 years old...)

Volvo cars... very quality wan lah...of course one hav to bear the price on maintenance, FC... and so on..

If TS want high performance Volvo 850, it better to go for those fitted with 2.3L turbocharged T5 engine as this engine could produce over than 200HP in stock form (no additional tuning, chipping, ECU etc).

T5 engine is usually fitted on wagon version of Volvo 850, or sometimes referred as Volvo 855.

In terms of value T5 engined wagon will always have better resale value compared to common 2.5L NA-engined 850 sedan.

There's anotherhi performance 850 sedan called 850R which has specially tuned T5 engine plus manual gearbox (a rarity among all FWD Volvos).

I'm eyeing on a 1997 S70. It's a 2.5 NA. I'm just wondering how many HP does it have.

142 or 168?

Thanks.

Varies. As car becomes older, it loses power. 168hp back then is maybe only 128hp now.

I mean as in trim level. What i found out on wiki is that the NA version has 2 versions. 142 and 168. Probably Malaysia version is 168HP. Can't seem to find 2.5 T or 2.3 T5 on the used market though. sad.gif

i am driving a s60 , FC and maintenance consider pretty affordable ( under 3k per year for regular service full synth+ occassional gear oil change ) , 40k km per year usage
from Kl to JB the back to KL , petrol abt Rm110 can get me abt 760km but thats long distance for city onli gets me abt 550-560km

for volvo , dont have to go back to swedish marque or federal auto . some mechanics in TTDI/kuchai lama is pretty good with volvo , well equipped with diagnosis computer.
eg body throttle ( ETM ) outside u can fix it for 2.2k but in FA/Swedish marque pretty to pay for 7-8k at least.

i agreed with disco , feels safer when i drive @220km with volvo rather than my old merz C class laugh.gif

Hi,

Just managed to get into this site while surfing for buyers for Volvo 850. I own one for the last five years (I bought it second hand). The purpose was for long distance and outstation travelling. The car is superb on handling, power, stability and most of all you feel safe driving one, besides fuel consumption for a 2.4L car is good (Swedish technology I guess) Fuel consumption is at its best when travelling long distance (less gear change I guess) The last time I checked it was RMo.13 per KM at the last fuel price before the current price.

For executive size cars, my advise is to get bigger cc engines to avoid stress and drag on the engines. A minimum 2.5 cc car is required. Don't purchase large executive cars with 2.0 L engines, you will end up with high fuel consumption. I know because I have driven cars of many engine sizes.

As for my car, it is a 1996 model Volvo 2.5L SE. I am willing to part with this one and can assure you it is well maintained and most major parts have been maintained well or replaced to last for a few more years. Parts like Engine and Gear box have been changed so you do not have to worry about problems from this area.

Only yesterday, I have the alternator replaced and the performance was near perfect - smooth with good pick up power. The reason for selling is because I already own three cars for two users (my wife and I)

Drop me a line if you are still interested.

Cheers!

I'm 21 and driving my dad's Volvo 850 2.5L SE.
It's a bit fuel consuming but it's a solid, stable and safe car.
market price for a second hand one is from RM8000 to RM18000.
But I wouldn't part with mine, it's well taken care of.

Old Volvos were safe for their time. Compared with modern cars, they are not. Those after 1997 perhaps, if compared to "modern" Japanese cars. But modern Contis or Koreans? No.

850 if im not mistaken is non-turbo i think,i have one 940 turbo, solid and powerful 2.4 litre turbo engine..maintainance not much cause once the car is well taken care hardly spoil one..mine is in very good running condition.petrol wise is about RM120 full tank..previous owner took good care of the car so when we bought over nothing much to do just polish and those minor stuff, but my brake pump is using air pressure one, that one only everytime kena problem...other than that good.
