If not mistaken both are using SiFR Star III GPS. It won't make much different which lock faster. IMHO

Where did you get this info about N97 using sirf star II gps chipset? i was always curious what type of gps chipset Nokia uses....

To those who have complaints... wait and see whether the coming version 11 firmware solves your problems/bugs. I have complaints too but will wait and see whether the new firmware update solves all or at least the main problems...

did u guys notice.. when incoming call, you can turn down the phone makes the screen facing the table, it will be silent.. pretty cool lah.. this is new feature or 5800 already has this function?
*
5800 sudah ade... its actually due to the accelerometer (the same meter when you turn phone horizontal and the screen auto rotates to landscape mode). You can also use it to silence your clock alarm. Its not the proximity sensor as blinky pointed out. That one is only used when there is a call active and the screen switches off when the sensor detects that the phone is close to something like your face. Its to prevent accidental presses of buttons or icons on your touchscreen, like accidentally pressing the "Call End" button or something while in the middle of a conversation.

For the slowness, the lags and the hangs and backlighting probs... try to the new firmware update when its out and see.. hopefully it will improve RAM management as well. It won't give you more RAM, but maybe it can free up more RAM.

I dun get the clapping sound when I flip up the screen. Maybe its the way your are doing it?

As for the memory card slot and having to open the back cover to access the slot, well, with 32GB onboard (which you also have said that you dunno how to fill up), most users will seldom have to access the card slot. In a way, its good that the card slot is not on the "outside'. If its outside and there is a cover, there may be a worry about the cover accidentally breaking off. And if there is no cover, there is a worry the slot is too exposed. With 32GB built-in, Nokia probably decided to put the card slot under the back cover to also avoid the aforesaid possible issues.

Actually, I find that the N97's output through the headphones is louder than the 5800's. However, as to quality compared to dedicated music players, thats a different story.

But i for one think we shouldn't compare the N97's music quality to dedicated music players for obvious reasons...

All depends on what u want...

Iphone, according to many has the best touchscreen. But to get it in Mayalysia (legally), you gotta chain yourself up to a contract and pay obscene money to Maxis. Noticed lately that Maxis signal is getting from bad to worse? You don't need to tie yourself down with a contract if you buy the N97.

For me, Iphone is not exactly a business phone too. For one thing, it has no keyboard, it can't do multi-tasking, and there is no "homescreen" with substantial information, just menu screens. Although the N97 is not categorised as a business phone, it is actually quite good as a business phone, especially with the qwerty keyboard it has. The E71 keyboard is a bit cramped for me and the screen of the E75 is too small for me.

And for those people calling other people idiots (whether specifically or generally), go start another thread somewhere and you can have fun there using the word idiot/s. Just dun waste space and time here.

Agreed with u, I prefer Iphone over Nokia N97

Just wondering, why didn't you get the Iphone in the first place? Or do u have one already?

Checked on the OTA update on the phone as well as the Nokia Malaysia website. Zilch, nothing yet. However, bear in mind we are ahead of the US and Europe in terms of timezone. So we should all check again sometime in the afternoon or early tomorrow morning. Wouldn't make sense if Malaysia got it first.

If you guys bother to go to the NCCs, they already have the new firmware. One girl from a NCC called me today during lunchtime to say that they have the new firmware already and that I can bring my phone in to flash it. Dun ask me why they called me cos' its a long story.

Went to the NCC to update the firmware in the evening at about 6:30pm. Done by 8:00 pm. Version 11! Yippeee!

[Oooppss.. when i mentioned "today", I meant Wednesday, 1st July, 2009. I just realised as I was typing this it was already past midnight and already Thursday, 2nd July, 2009.]

If you go to the NCC to update, all your contacts, messages, calendar entries, notes etc will be gone (unless it was saved in the mass memory). So I would advise to backup.

The slide lock key - backlight issue has been fixed, happily. It was irritating the hell out of me! Overall responsiveness seems faster but dun expect superspeeds! But then this is subjective.

One thing I noticed improved a lot is the speed of switching of the screen from portrait mode to landscape and vice versa.

I also have the video recording with low sound volume bug but I have not tested whether this has been fixed yet.

Photo thumbnails viewing in the default photo viewer has improved. Thumbnails are clear and they load faster now.

As for the other bugs, I will have to use the phone a few more days before reporting anything as I either never experienced some of the bugs before or some of the bugs come and go randomly and cannot be re-produced at will. So have to use a bit more to see.

For those who can't wait to get the new firmware, and you have time, go update your phone at a NCC. But remember to backup first!

low video sound recording problem is because the mic is placed at the slide on keypad there, u have to slide on to get clearer sound..
*

That would make it quite impractical.... you won't be able to see what you are capturing properly since the screen is tilted when it is flipped up. I am sure they can tweak the software to at least improve it a bit...

which NCC did u went to?
i called NCC in sunway pyramid and they said theres still no latest firmware update v11 for n97..
*
Thats strange... anyway, I went to the one in One Utama, old wing, near the cinema. For others, if you plan to go to other NCCs, then I suggest you call them first, otherwise go there and waste your time only if they dun have it in the end.

QUOTE(blinky @ Jul 2 2009, 03:08 PM)
But how come loss of data?

I thought firmware updates on the N97 will not cause loss of data.
*
If you do it OTA, then most probably no data loss (though I would advise you to backup in any event just in case). If you do it through the NSU or the the NCC most probably there will be data loss. With my old 5800 last time, i updated through NSU before and had a data loss. But when i updated a second time there was no data loss. So, who knows.

But to avoid any confusion, when I am talking about data loss, only the data in the Phone Memory may be lost. The data in the Mass Memory will be ok as it acts like a memory card. It should not be affected by the updating procedure.

But just back up anyway (even if you do it OTA later). No harm and its easy. Do you really want to risk it? The NCC does not guarantee anything and they even asked first whether I have backed up or not. To be safe, backup everything including your Mass Memory, which may take a long time. At least do it once a month or something. Then for other times, if you are lazy, just backup everything but leave out your Mass Memory.

do you check the version of your N97, sometimes for the new model, when user complaint about the hang problem and ask for update, actually service center just reboot the phone only, but not upgrade any firmware cause there still don't have any..
*
Yes, most definitely I checked. Do the *#0000# right? Software version V 11.0.021. Software version date 15-06-2009. Custom version 11.0.021.C01.01. Custom version date 15-06-2009.

Here's a screensnap:

ic, may be Nokia Service Center pull back for this service due to certain reason..happen before..
*
It has also happened in the past that some NCCs have the updates and some don't. And sometimes, updates already available on the internet but the NCCs still dun have it. Whatever it is, dun just take my word for it. Call the One Utama NCC or drop by there and ask them. Number is 03-77253306. Small warning though, sometimes the number seems like its forever engaged or seems like there is no one answering. All I can say is keep trying.

Guys, I'm heading over to 1Utama after this. Already called them and they confirmed that they have V11.

Just one question. How do I backup all my stuff? I went to File Manager and click on Backup, it says that I don't have a memory card. How? I've never backup anything before.

Can someone explain the process to me from backing up to replacing all my backed up files into the new firmware please? Thanks!
*
Use PC Suite to do it and backup to your computer. Yeah, its strange that we can only backup to a memory card but not the mass memory.... i just tried it just now and I couldn't backup without a card.

Otherwise, if you kan cheong wanna go update today but you either dun have personal PC or you haven't installed PC Suite, go buy a sd card and masuk for the backup! Can get in 1 Utama...

But how do I restore my backup into the phone? Is it a complicated process?
*
Its as easy as making a backup. Just follow the instructions carefully. Dun worry, the instructions are not very complicated.

Added on July 2, 2009, 5:07 pmI just heard that the update is now available OTA using the phone. Please check now and see?

Just open as a drive as hasyir said, make sure you enable your PC to view all hidden files and folders, select all and copy and paste. Its going take forever if you use ovi/pc suite to backup 6GB of stuff! Copy and paste also gonna take quite long as it is!

When that is done, when you perform backup on ovi or pc suite again, no need to backup mass memory but back up everything else.
