if dont have, apply different aperture and shutter.

apply rule of third.

lighting

angle.

contrast

photoshop skills help a lot. like brighten up where you suppose to brighten up only so it wont cuz over exposure to some part of the pic.

don't be too satisfied with one pic. do bracketing.

photography skills left untouched after my photography class.
i know all those because i learn designing and it was one of my uni taught subjects.
it's okay if you dowan to photoshop too 'hardcore',
but lighting and angle wise there's still problem.
unless you intentionally doing monochrome photo - yeah, it looks very monochrome.
contrast wise, even monochrome pics have contrasts.
your second pic is much better, your first pic totally under exposed.
second pic - there's over and under exposed area, well done, but the lighting coming from wrong direction, so the ice-cream doesn't have enough highlights area.

but becareful cuz there's some harsh critics, real harsh that it may hurts you from the comments.
