Just my opinion:
if you are looking for self improvement courses, though interested in finance related topics but without any background in finance, then go for CFP.
CFP is not just for those who want to become a financial planner, but is is suitable for all - it is about personal finance and money management skills. I know many of my friends (IT staff, engineers, teacher, pilot..) are studying CFP for self interest and self improvement, besides, they want to learn to be a smart investor and manage their money well -- this is something they have not learned in school.
CFA might be tough for you unles you want to switch career.
As for academic programs, that will depend on whether you really need it or not.
