This new beta build fixes a bug that appeared a few builds ago where the governor, under certain conditions the governor would not launch due to a malfunctioning file system based synchronization object. This is cleaned up now, and a leftover mistaken file sync object is automatically cleaned up by this build..

The last beta was ok, but I noticed while testing the automatic update that the governor wasn't re-launched on that first run. This bug may have been in the last few betas. Regardless, I've now noticed it - and am issuing a quick fix, then moving on to other things.

Those who have seen the startup crash should see it *at least* lessoned in this version. If not, use the new Startup Delay as I advised in an earlier post.

Due to a change in the installer, and use of the new automated update, some users will have experienced a condition where the GUI fails to start the governor when they manually launch it, and after an automatic update. This beta should fix that.

I am getting too caught up in band-aids for quickie releases to fix other problems, so am going to slow down on the releases a bit.

This build does not yet include certain other enhancements I'm working on.

This beta release includes the aforementioned new features:

Completely automated update option (in the Update menu)
Disable inter-process communication (no graph tooltips or system tray balloons, but still highlights on graph). Disabled by default in the server edition for now.
The automated update seems to work quite well in testing. I do still need to add some recovery mechanisms for sudden network connectivity failures, but it generally does well and is quite rapid with a download size only about 50% of the original installer (at present, depending on if I update docs or not).

Since I have 'cried wolf' like five times now, I am not going to be over-confident. However, I am pretty certain I got the cause of the random startup crash. Now, I suppose it is possible there is more than one cause. However, I think this is what was happening to most systems. See my previous post for a full description of the errata.

YOU tell me... and don't be scared to tell me if it still occurs. I know I've fixed a crash point. Whether I made any mistakes or caused new problems, we'll see as testing progresses. I will continue evaluating the code.

This build has a large assortment of changes and fixes. This time I didn't document them too well, as it has been over a large period of time and I frankly grew tired of documenting every small change. Instead, I focused on trying to get this out the door.

One slightly disappointing note is that not all planned issues have been addressed, therefore this is not RC1. Instead, it is another beta. The disk/file cache purge feature is still temporarily disabled as I noticed a malfunction during testing on some NT platforms that I need to iron out. It shouldn't be a big deal, but I don't want to enable it half-assed.

Some reported bugs may remain, other will be fixed. There are still a few small ones on the list, and a few improvements I've not gotten to. One of the issues compounding this unusual delay in new builds has been an over-obligation to address too much at once.

I had reports of continued problems with NIS 2011 SONAR, but I have not been able to reproduce that at all. This was something I addressed in the last final. If using the last stable build, switch to the beta and all should be well. I will continue testing on some other platforms though to be sure. As a side note, Norton's interface is almost game-like ;p.

v5.0.0.1 beta - trimming out unfinished features
After a little more extensive testing of the rather basic core parking toggle, I've decide to remove it until I issue the next beta series *after* this next final. I want to add appropriate code to revert any changes, not to mention refine the technique a little. The same applies for the cache purge, which is not all that useful anyway (in contrast to what these cache optimization utilities would tell you).

The 32-bit workstation build's auto update was broken a couple builds ago when I added support for the server edition. A typo caused it to grab the 64-bit build instead. This has been fixed, though it won't be until you update *from* v5.0.0.6 beta or later that the automated updater will work. 64-bit standard edition users will be fine, as well as server edition users.

Users who updated the x64 build to v5.0.0.10 might have gotten v5.0.0.9 again. This was due a typo in the build system, causing it to fail to upload the x64 workstation auto update because it got deleted while creating the x64 server edition auto upload.

http://www.bitsum.com/files/prolasso.zip

http://www.bitsum.com/changelog/pl/changes.htm

Welcome to the future. I'll not ramble on about changes, as there have been hundreds. We pretty much know what has been added. I/O Priorities, HyperThreaded core avoidance, a variety of improvements and optimizations.

This final fixes a handle leak that occurred in the last couple *betas*(only) - specifically, those released in the last 48 hours or so. Therefore, it is important you go ahead and upgrade if you were using the last couple betas. The handle leak isn't something that would affect the rest of the system, it would only eventually cause Process Lasso's memory utilization to increase.

This build should be a good one, though of course you can expect to see the usual barrage of minor updates as I continue polishing and perfecting the code - a chore that never ends. In fact, I already have the next minor update planned, lol. The good news is that the new AUTOMATED UPDATES should allow users to easily keep up to date. I believe the system is functioning nominally now, though this will be the first public final/stable build test of it.

Enjoy!

v5.0.0.20
One of the optimizations I employ is reusing memory instead of having to free and reallocate it. Yes, it does make things a bit more complicated, but it improves efficiency considerably. Sadly, while I reviewing the code I saw a logic error that needed repairing. I have no idea if it ever manifested in the real world, I've not seen it. It would have manifested most likely as a crash.

However, I did fix something that I know did manifest in an XP test bed I have with a unique software environment that includes NIS 2011: a very small memory leak in the core engine. I do not know how many systems were affected, I certainly have not seen this on any other test beds. Also, it is a very small and slow leak that would take a good amount of time to build up (and be continually paged out in the meantime). So, it is unlikely anyone who was affected actually noticed. Regardless, I repaired it and am issuing this update.

Thus, we have v5.0.0.20:

[.20]Fix.Core: Fixed a logic error in memory reuse optimization (unknown if manifested in real world)
[.20]Fix.Core: Fixed a small memory leak seen in exhaustive testing under XP /w NIS 2011 present (special handling involved with NIS2011)
[.20]Change.GUI: Updated Serbian Latin
[.20]Change.GUI: Updated Finnish
Please keep in mind this version was a large leap, and I certainly do wish I had polished it more prior to the first final version. However, we are where we are, and I can say that it is now where it should have been to start with. Yes, I am embarrassed with the admission that I discovered more bugs. At least I discovered these before they were even reported, for what it is worth wink.gif.

The polishing continues...
