Nothing better to do during last weekend, so I assign myself one simple project. Found an old transformer 240V AC to 12V AC. Decided to build a 12V DC voltage supply with it by using simple schottky circuit and RC filter. I compare it with PSU from laptop and the one from Jln Pasar to power TA2024. In my opinion it is much better than laptop PSU, it is close match to Jln Pasar one which cost me RM150. not bad for a piece of junk.
Out of curiosity I swap the t-amp with my 2 channels car amp. The stage is bigger, warmer, bass is heavier, deeper and lower with Jln pasar PSU, but with my own build power supply, the voltage drop when ever I turn up the volume, it certainly don't supply enough power to the amp. But 1 thing lacking from the car amp is the high, 2024 is much cleaner and details. Anyone got any more tips to squeeze more juice from the transformer? jazzy, it was a Mean Well single switch power supply. Got it for 5-6 years.
I didn't understand your question on 'How 'big' is the 12V tranny, interms of VA? I think the tranny don't have enough 'juice' ler' you refer to the Mean Well or the one i build for testing? |

chchyong89,
You can try change C18 and 19 to bigger size, that will improve the bass. You can try different cap material at C14 and 15. From normal plastic to metal foil. The normal one, I like Polypropylene more than Polyester. You can try different size also from 1-5uF. I would say the changes here will give you more obvious result. There are a few more SMC you haven't change, maybe you should change that as well. A |

chchyong89,
I think t-amp more suitable for music than movie. Beside the components, you need a good power supply, if you want to build your own, 50VA transformer is minimum. If you want to buy ready made you will get the one that can supply 1A minimum. Enjoy your mod, it worth the trouble and give you a lot of fun. Since it is so cheap, you can have a few boards and test everything you can get your hand on. Gong Xi Fatt Cai to you. Added on January 5, 2010, 6:39 pmBy the way, there is already some write-up by the sifus here at the front few pages, read on it and will save you time to test everything. jazzy,
All connection got marking but just not that one, maybe it is hidden under the connector. No paper include in the package. Looking at the power rails caps and input caps, I am already thinking what caps should I change. I think is is a disease. This post has been edited by kww: Feb 9 2010, 12:06 PM |

Price is one thing. To desolder the old chip and solder back the new one going to be deficult. Good luck. |

Yesterday night manage to fix it to a casing.
Couldn't resist to change the 470uF power supply cap and add an input MKP. Not much time to listen but frist impression is noisy (I think because I use an AC trans). Sound pressure is higher. Wait until I am back from hometown to review more. Attached thumbnail(s) |

The 'box' for the t-amp is actually recycle from my wife's old watches empty plastic containers, have a few laying around just use it as the size is right. Here I attach some clearer pictures. I also include the small brother (ta-2024) of ta-2020 in the picture to compare, 2024 is the orange container, 2020 is the almost transparent Adidas container.
After I use DC 12V, the noise is gone, so it is confirm my old 12v ac trans is noisy. Also with the AC trans, it will clip (red light blinking) when I turn it on loud, but my DC power supply can turn all the way to max, only my ear can't take it. There is a slight noise during start-up but after that everything is good. Love the sound so far. Attached thumbnail(s) |

QUOTE(CV6149 @ Feb 19 2010, 04:44 PM) I have listen to a 2024 in car, doesn't like it, it sound thin and a bit clinical to my linking (I don't know what setting or equipments used beside 2024). I also have doubt in sound pressure and headroom. Usually car amp is high power and current.xtorm is the best person to give comment. He done some projects in car for both 2020 and 2024. |
