You goto Control Panel>Sound. Under Playback tab, open up the speaker properties. Then goto Levels tab, and drag the wave slider to the maximum.

What sound card are you using and are you talking about EAX Effects ? (that gives the boom when playing old-games which are EAX-enabled)
Some onboard audio card's "boom boom" may have been stripped off in Vista. Especially Realtek onboard (The control panel for XP has a lot more functions as opposed to the one in Vista)

So wait , you're using onboard sound card right now ?
Its better to opt for Creative X-Fi (like the one I am using now) for optimal sound quality. Their drivers work well with Vista. Pair it together with ffdshow (to trans-code and to output to 5.1)
To tell you the truth , onboard audio with Vista sucks. Maybe they give you a bit more options on XP but on Vista you are better with Creative's Sound cards !

Try to run ffdshow first. Then tweak with it to get the best sound quality if it works. Alternatively you may want to check out Garage Sales. You can get XFi cards for like RM 150+ (these are way better then Audigy Value)

QUOTE(ckmoy007 @ Dec 2 2008, 07:34 AM) perhaps it's driver's fault. Most likely it's driver fault because some hardware devices don't have 64-Bit architecture.

Bro,
Can be a bit more specific? I thought you only complaint about volume being not enough. Now bass also lacking? If you can, please list your speaker model and make, as well as your soundcard model and make. What kind of multimedia files that you are playing (DVD or avi or RMVB or what)?

I cant see any VIIR model. I think its IIR model as its also 5.1 speaker.
Aiya. Easy la. All those files that you play usually have stereo sound source. Thats why you have to problem with it.
The reason for this is that most sound source from game, mp3, avi and movies are still in stereo. When you set the speaker to 5.1, it has no data at all for the rear and subwoofer. What I can suggest to you is change it to 4.1 in the speaker setting. Then try again playing all those files that you wanna play with. In this setting, the center channel will be off.
I dont really recommend using 5.1 for music as all the software do is mix the sound from the left and right, blend it together and play it. 4.1 is enough liao to create surround sound. 5.1 is only useful when you play DVD. The DD or AC3 sound format has 5 channel output and therefore by using the appropriate software like PowerDVD to convert the signal into 5.1, then only you can hear the difference especially in action picture.
BTW, if when you play your mp3 and there is no sound from the rear (after using 4.1), try Foobar2000. Go into the preference, set the "CONVERT STEREO TO 4CHANNEL" option. Not sure how Vista behaves but in XP, this shouldnt be a problem.
