One epic 2D ending that held an impression to me till today belonged to Final Fantasy III (VI in Japan) for the SNES. The joy that came from the satisfactory closure for all the characters overwhelmed my sadness that the long journey and battle had ended. The final battle had a true sense of urgency where the world was in real danger and Kefka NEEDS to be stopped at all costs. I was even using Shadow to throw my Atma Weapon and Illumina as shuriken-ammo, as my levels were low then. The rest were chaining Ultima like nobody's business
