My girlfriend's PC is running Pentium 4 2.5GHz, 1GB RAM and Asus motherboard.

Just when after Windows XP loading screen, then it will go to the Windows Dekstop. So that she has the AntiVir anti-virus, if the startup run successfully and ready, the icon will display as "open the umbrella", so same with the MSN Live Messenger, it will pop up too.

For my girlfriend case, the taskbar, toolbar, dekstop icon every thing pop out during startup, but the AntiVir didn't open the umbrella, MSN Live Messenger didn't pop up, and if you shut down the PC in that period, about 2 programs will need you to "End Now" before you can shut down. So every she have to wait for about 3 minutes, then the AntiVir umbrella only open and MSN Messenger only pop out.

It's like the PC is freezing in that startup period, but programs are still can run but very very slow, after AntiVir and MSN Messenger pop up, then everything run smoothly.

Any way to solve that "freezing period"?

Thanks a lot.

Extra Information:
In that period, her Processes is only 24, PF Usage only about 150mb, which is really adnormal, normally should be reach 30++ Processes .

Normally her PC startup will just load some programs like LAN, AntiVir, and the rest of the system files and .dll files.

Every time I on my PC, it will just run like normal startup then all programs will load out together such as MSN Live Messenger, LAN and other .dll files, but her PC is not, it will load to dekstop but then delay for about few minutes, then other programs only come out. And just now I have take a view on the processes, while in "freezing period", the processes is 24, when all the programs come out after that "freezing period", the processes increase 1 by 1 (ex. 24 -> 25, 25->26...29->30), which means the PC finish load all the programs.

This thing happend to me when I use Kaspersky Internet Security.
When I use trial version, pc boot normally, but after some time situation becomes like urs.
Now, I am using full version, pc tends to boot faster.
U may try to use CCleaner to clean registry n prefetch too.
