Bkt Jayu Hitam is the border outpost between Thailand & M'sia. Nearest town/Village b4 Bkt Kayu Hitam is Chanloon where u can find lotsa parking & restaruants for tourist wishing to the sin city of Hatyai drool.gif ..Alor Setar to Bkt Kayu Hitam is only 40min away & from Bkt Kayu Hitam to Hatyai is another 45min.

Yes Hatyai is another day trip possible from Alor Setar..Only 1.5 hr away drool.gif . For town/fun, No need Hatyai..just after the Bkt Kayu Hitam is another flourishing town called Danouek...just 1KM away from Bkt Kayu Hitam...It's getting lively by days & actually more entertaining than Hatyai oledi!! drool.gif

Danoek used to be Thailand sleepy town even wayback in Mid 1990 (i still remember it's just a small outpost town wth few wooden shops just after Thai border checkpoint... however M'sia North South Highway that link Bkt Kayu Hitam (Still sleepy till Today!! No progress at all sad.gif ) has transformed this sleepy danoek into 2nd Hatyai..lotsa hotels 7 now more bricks shops houses & highrises ..and yet on M'sia side a shamefull no progress BKH!

I dun really stopped in Danoek bcos most of my trip is wth wife & children...but if u are single that town hv lotsa sinful activities..normally u can see lotsa guys from M'sian border crossing over for fast fix b4 returning to M'sia..Its much nearer than Hatyai which is another 45min away. & suprisingly hatyai nowadays is abit tame compare to 15yrs ago..Makan ...no idea..din stop there...normally makan @ hatyai..which is one cut-throat city & prices of food more expensive than KL & bangkok!! mad.gif

Since you are chinese, you should eat the chinese food there cuz its more delicious and cheaper than KL. theres a famous mamak near mahathir's old house which is pretty good and reasonable too. its a peaceful place you know. just walk around and enjoy the non rushing schedule.

Added on November 13, 2008, 10:11 pmyes, you need a passport.

Added on November 13, 2008, 10:13 pm.. to go to danok.

Yeah I'm from A.Setar. I dunno about Chinese food, only know Malay food. For lunch, try those restaurant at Pumpong Area, a lot of choices. They are 2 famous restaurant there (Sri Pumpong and I forgot, its located 2-3 shop after Sri Pumpong). For evening, try Laksa at Kuala Kedah or Laksa Telok Kechai along Jalan Kuala Kedah. You will notice a lot of car, park at the side of road. If you go laksa Telok Kechai, dont forget to try Pulut Sambal.

If you only have 1/2 day, better go Laksa Telok Kechai. You cant find this type of laksa anywhere else.
