QUOTE(vex @ Jan 17 2009, 10:34 AM) check liao ... sudah kena ~ according to Seagate its due to the firmware. the affected hard drives will fail without any warning sign. any Operating System will not be able to detect the hard drives. the data will still be intact though as the failure causes the hard drive to be unrecognizable only.but i still using it now ... so far so good ... dunno when only will have problem, i dun understand the defect, lost data during power failure ? mean half way cut off the power will cost data lost ? |

ar188: yea back already. last weekend busy with an accord.
the official statement from seagate is here. it claims to offer free data recovery services if any data is lost after/during the firmware update or caused by the faulty firmware. this should be international support so just got to send back the drives to Seagate Singapore. the fixed firmware is only available through email with Seagate tech support. if anyone has it already then they can share it out. |

the newer 7200.11 SATA version shouldnt be affected as those are using 3 platters (ST310003 33AS, SD35). its only the 4 platter version (ST310003 34AS, SD15) which are badly affected.
my external maxtor basics came with the SD35 version. |

QUOTE(ar188 @ Jan 17 2009, 11:32 PM) brand new purchase theres no definite way apart from telling whether its a Seagate or Maxtor drive being used. check the sticker on the box. all Seagate drives are identified by the 'STXXXXXXXXX' code. but technically it would be safe to assume that it will always come with the newer 3 platter version since production cost would be cheaper.through windows, the drive can be identified using Device Manager. again, all Seagate drives will be named starting with 'ST' prefix. for the 1TB, look for the ending code. 33AS is the three platter while 34AS is the four platter version. for OEM bare drives, the product code is always printed on the top so it can be easily checked before buying. |
