I have been reading the thread with interest, and finally got mine recently. Pls help on the below, my firmware is 1.02.7:-

1. When I try to eject the HDD, the WDTV hangs. Need to hard reset by switching off the power, anyone have this issue??

2. When playing MKV files, nothing happens when i press the "next" button. Isn't it supposed to move the movie forward by 10mins each press?

3. Audio is set to Digital: When playing movies with AAC 5.1, no sound comes out from WDTV -> receiver (receiver does state its receiving AAC-MPEG sound). Only by resetting to "Stereo" does the TV (via HDMI) outputs sound. I hv tried this with PS3, same thing. Does this mean the file is corrupted, despite the PS3 says its AAC 5.1 sound is embedded??

4. Audio set to Digital: When playing movies with DTS or DD sound, the HDMI sound to TV is muted. I read somewhere that WDTV sends sound via both HDMI and Toslink, anyone notices that the HDMI is muted when playing DTS/DD files??

Pls help, any suggestions is appreciated. Thnx!! rclxms.gif rclxms.gif

there are many models available here http://www.vantecusa.com/front/product/pro_list/70

The one I am using is http://www.vantecusa.com/front/product/view_detail/295 in black colors to match my WDTV biggrin.gif
bought it in SG, converted to about RM 170.

The reason I use this is because, if I need to transfer huge data files, I can always use the eSATA to my PC, USB2 is way too slow to transfer terrabytes.
I can use the regular external HDD, but I have no patient in waiting for data transfer biggrin.gif

the HDD Dock max out at 65MBps for eSATA on my PC, while the same dock only do 15-20MBps for USB2, my other USB2 HDD also around 15-20MBps.

I am thinking to buy 2 more docks, so I have all together 3, for my WDTV, Main PC and office use.  Then I just need to swap my hdd without taking off the whole dock in future.

The Vantec single HDD dock is available in Digital Mall in Section 13. Cant recall the shop but its on display on the window, listed price at RM99 only.

The maxtor Basic external HDD 1TB.  I also use the Vantec Docking station. So I have an option of both external and internal HDD and will get whatever is cheaper.  I got my Vantec from a lelong.com seller for $125. There are other cheaper models from the same seller.

The Maxtor Basic 3.5 external HDD is selling for RM329 only at ThunderMatch in Low Yat Plaza, and in AllIT in Digital Mall Section 13 PJ. Offer till 30th May and 29th May respectively. Happy shopping!!

I have got my WDTV and been trying it out on various file format. Still seems something not powerful enough, especially on the sound.

I have a LCD in my house, will HDMI cable improve the sound quality?

To get the best sound, connect yr WDTV to an AV Receiver using the digital optical output (Toslink) and not using the red/white RCA connection. This way, ur AVR gets the sound and amps it up to your liking.

If you are using ur TV speakers for the sound, then too bad, pretty much every connection will suck, even HDMI.

1. Have not heard anyone having hanging issues when ejecting drives.

2. To skip forward 10mins, you first need to fast forward using the (>>) button THEN press the NEXT (>|) button. Same thing if you want to reverse by 10 minutes.

3. Possibly a corrupted mkv.

4. WDTV cannot decode DTS internally. Western Digital did not pay for THAT license. So all DTS data will be sent out via TOSLINK to be decoded by a receiver. I'm not too sure about DD but I think if you set the Audio to Digital, it means sending out via Toslink only. I need to confirm this with my WDTV when I get back home.

1. The hanging eject happens to both my HDD, a Maxtor and a WD..... need to hard reset the unit, anyone else have this issue with current firmware??

2. Thnx for the info, was wondering how to skip forward 10min, takes a long time to skip at 16X speed (for a 3 hour Jacky Cheung Concert... rclxms.gif ) Does this work on other formats as well (non MKV, like AVI and MP4)??

3. Possibly corrupted file. Its not a MKV, its an MP4.

4. Yeah, need to check this again with DD to reconfirm.

Additional Question: How does WDTV handle DTS-MA to receivers? My Pioneer receiver is having problem decoding the DTS-MA signal, its switches from DTS and DTS 96 (thus distorted sound) when it gets a DTS-MA signal from WDTV. Is this a WDTV or the receiver issue?

Thnx so much for the replies.

Anyway ... I got issue playing video from my nikon D90.. anyone has the same problem ?

One tip for new buyers, if you are looking for the HDD stand, look at the side of the box with the features in logos. The newer box (without the stand) has two additional logos, "Simplay" and "Dolby Digital". The older box (with the stand) does not have these two logos. Also, pls read the fine print on the FRONT of the box, just below the HDD stand. The newer box states that it does not come with drive stand. U will need to have magnifying glasses to read dem fine print.

ThunderMatch at LYP is still selling them at RM370, and both versions (with and without box) are still available there, just do some work to find the ones you want. And the HDD stand is mainly for WD Passports only, and other models with slim casing, u cant squeeze a Maxtor full into it without breaking it.

For videos from Digicams, they are usually in the .MOV format. You need to mux (convert the version) to MKV or AVI or VOB or Divx to see it using the WDTV. Google the instructions on how to convert them.

Added on May 27, 2009, 11:11 amIt seems that WDTV does have some problems playing MP4 files with AAC 5.1 sound, and you need to switch the Audio from Digital to Stereo to get sound. Here is the discussion thread in WDTV forums.

Errr... excuse me arr.... but as most portable 2.5in HDD are 5400rpm, so if these drives can play FullHD movies with little fuss, why cant a 3.5in 5400rpm drive play them with as little fuss???

I am not a techie guy, that y i am very curious....

Hi ... what is currently the best offer for this player?

The best i could find so far, is Compu-zone at Low Yat, selling it for RM399 with free HDMI cable.

Thanks!
*
The price is reasonable coz its inclusive a HDMI cable (albeit prolly a cheaper cable).

Try Thunder Match on the top floor, they have a whole lot bunch selling at RM370, no cables. Also, you can still find the old box which comes with a HDD stand too.

Happy hunting.
