tis is my Sheltie.. its around 6-7 months when the pet shop told me when i bought it 2 weeks ago..

i need some advise here.. i found out tat it got some whitish stuff on its fur on his head.. so i bring it to a vet when i suspect tat it might be lice infection.. the vet did say its lice..

the noob vet kinda blur.. even flipping his manual to c ways to cure lice on GP.. he brought me 2 kind of spray.. he say which can b used on rabbit but not sure GP.. WTH??

then finally he give an injection to my sheltie GP tat he claimed to be 'safe' and will kill the parasites in 1 weeks time and ask me to return for 2nd injection.. does tis work!!!???? POOR MY GP!!.. it eventually fell on the ground from the table when it heard dog's barking in the vet clinic as it slips from my hand,it was panic.. heart ache!!

pls reply asap as i m worry about its condition or suggest me to bring it to any better vet..?i m staying in Cheras area.. thanks thanks.. i really love my sheltie..

to Yeoh Vet at Taman Megah, he is a good doctor...
Vet nearby Cheras, u have to ask Juztiny.

u have to grab them when they are on the table, this is a must.
even Doctor also will not let them free while checking.

If the vet already given your GP a jab, then better wait for one week and see any improvement or not.  If still the same after one week, then I could help you on this lice problem.  I lived in Cheras, Damai Perdana.

oh oh.. damani perdana.. i know tat place..
hope my GP's condition will get better.. if not i bring my GP to u okay??^^(or juz bring my GP for a 2nd injection??)

Well...your GP is not used to have fresh veg, that will take time for you to slowly figure out what type of fresh veg is its favourite.  But if you have another GP, then it may have better appetite, as it will observe its buddy, if its buddy eat, then it will follow.

Sorry for your loss. Most likely is due to that jab...I experienced the same before, that is why now I never bring my GPs to vet for treatment.

4 years ago my 1st & 2nd GP died after seeking vet's treatment too. The vet gave a jab, and after 4-6 hours they died. Actually last time my GPs weren't sick, I thought they were, because they peed a lot and their butt always wet, so I thought they were having diarrhea. The vet also inexperience to tell the difference.

so wat u do nowadays when they are really having diarrhea or show symptoms of illness if u dont want to bring them to vet? any vet who are experienced in treating GP??

You can try treating lice with with a pyrethrum powder, spray, or shampoo made for puppies or kittens.  They also make one specifically for rodents that is safe. Try looking for a product called Advantage made by Bayer. I have seen many sites that recommend this for lice treatment for GP's. Alternatively you can go to the vet and get your GP's a shot.

not very recommended to give a shot.. will give the gp a panic and stress.. my 1st gp died b4 of a shot for lice.. so damn sad..

by the way.. where can i get the medicated shampoo for lice or the Advantage??any recommended place??thx for sharing..

That is very unusual to have wet or teary eyes on GP.

But one thing I noticed that red eyes GP are more sensitive towards bright sunlight.  Day time they (red eyes GP) will tend to close their eyes half size smaller.

nope my GP's eyes are black.. both oso have teary eyes.. shud i send them for dianogsis? any recommended vet around cheras?

hi sorry for the late reply...i currently have 7GPs including the 2 i adopt from you...happy.gif they are now mixed well with my other GP, no more shy2...

but sadly i have to inform you this, 1 of the GP i adopt from you (Nettie the female) is having some kind of skin disease. i noticed it just now as i groom her for the first time, i saw white flakes on the skin area, at her back. there is also 1 part thay lost some fur and the skin shows bare with thw white flakes surrounding the area....it looks like dandruff flakes, and its alot too...i never saw this in any of my other GP. but her case looks severe so i have to isolate her for the time being....

can anyone tell me what this disease is and how to cure it? from what i read form this site : http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?c=18+1800&aid=2998

"T. caviae causes severe scratching and self-trauma. There may also be hair loss, thickening of the skin, redness, and papules. This mite usually affects the head, shoulders, back, and flanks of the guinea pig, but may spread to the entire animal. Secondary bacterial infections can occur. The itching is so severe that some animals may appear to have seizures or other abnormal behavior. Severely infected pregnant guinea pigs may abort. Some guinea pigs may carry the mite, but show no signs. Then, if they are stressed by poor nutrition, cold temperatures, or other illnesses, they may develop disease. The mite is transmitted by direct contact, and can temporarily infest people.

An infestation with T. caviae can be diagnosed by a veterinarian performing a skin scraping. The mites can be difficult to find, and the veterinarian may prescribe treatment solely based on the clinical signs of disease.

The most common treatment is ivermectin injections every 10 days for three treatments. Animals in contact with the infested animal should be treated, as well. The mites can survive in the environment, so it is recommended that the housing be cleaned and then soaked in a lime sulfur solution at a dilution of 1:40 (one part lime sulfur to 40 parts water). Dry everything thoroughly before placing the guinea pig back into his housing."

i suspect poor Nettie has Trixacarus caviae. my lil sister developed an allergic reaction towards her, as after my sis hold nettie some reddish "benjol" like mosquito bites will appear on her hands and where nettie touched her...and maybe thats is what the article meant by "The mite is transmitted by direct contact, and can temporarily infest people."

can this be self treated by pet owner? can applying ivermectin direct on the infected area can help or i really need to jab her? and where can i find lime sulfur? hope anyone can help, i'm worried about Nettie, she's just a little gurl...plus the other GP  can get infected too... icon_question.gif

Do bear in mind that it may take 2 weeks to fully recovered with new fur.  But you can see some improvement within next 3-4 days.
