Well, my elite set just RROD on me 2 days ago, incredibly after 10 months. I'm sending it down to my friend in Singapore this Friday to get him to get the unit replaced. The entire Xbox ownership experience has one glaring eyesore and it's the failure rate of their damn console.

FALCON ?

Yep, Falcon set. RRODed after 10 months and I don't even play it a lot. If it RRODs one more time, I'm definitely going to sell the damn machine and get a PS3 instead.

Since I sent it to my friend in Singapore to help me claim warranty, I expect to get a refurb unit back sometime before Christmas.

My patience wears thin with Microsoft. I have no issues if their console is problem free but as it is, the reliablility is down the drain and what's worse, it's not even officially supported here in Malaysia so there's absolutely no after sales service or support to speak off. So getting it repaired means you either get someone to xclamp it for you or replace the graphic chip or find some way to send it down to Singapore which is a pain in the a$$.

I play but have to worry about RROD each time I turn the machine on, and that really spoils the entire xbox ownership experience.

I will be getting mine back from Singapore next Tuesday - process was relatively simple

emailed MSFT singapore, got a service number - sent my xbox to my friend in Singapore via DHL (RM150 courier charge) and another 65SGD customs charge on my friend (I declared the unit at RM1950 value) - had him call MSFT in Singapore which he was kept on hold for 45 minutes ;( and was told to bring the unit in a week later in exchange for a refurbished falcon set. Now, I wonder how much customs will charge me when it arrives in Malaysia :/

It's a lot of work just to claim warranty sad.gif

Well, I got my xbox360 back from Singapore. They gave me an October 2007 unit. I'm like whatever, as long as it works. The custom clearance came to a sum of RM113.11 (declared USD155).

Hopefully, no more problems from now on.

Hhmm.. how did you get taxed?

It was couriered over?

Courier via DHL, hence I had prepared in advance a non-commercial invoice declared at USD155 for the unit (exclude all power cables and accessories).

As far as i remember, warranty item has no tax.

Did you show the warranty letter that Microsoft issue after the replacement.

Although i carry it back by hand, they did disturb me but with the letter, they just let me go?

Added on December 9, 2008, 5:36 pmLogic is that you ALREADY paid for the tax when you bought the item. You should not need to pay the tax again

Yes logically I need not pay any tax. But like Djinn said, it's Malaysian custom and I'm going through DHL - if I dispute this, it could drag out another 3 or 4 days and who knows what might happen to the unit? I'd rather just pay them and save the trouble.

Alternatively, you could always drive down to Singapore, go through the entire process and then drive back up to Singapore again a week or so from the date you send it in.

It cost about RM90 for the toll from KL to Singapore and back, about 20SGD just to top up a cash card coz you do need to park afterall and about 14 hours your time and let's forget petrol which cost about RM140 (return trip x 2 with Vios as a reference). The total cost will come to about the same as having it couriered down.

Btw, putting RMA item and the following: "Returned from Warranty: Not for resale and no commercial value" does absolutely nothing. I had those printed out in large bold letters and they still tax me. But I suppose it's also how much you have it declared when it's being sent back - to me, it's better to be safe than sorry - If it gets lost in transit or damaged in the process, you can always claim back from courier company. If you declare it as USD1 and something happens in transit then......

The point is, if you're an end-user planning to courier it down - it's better to declare full value but if you're in the business like Djinn then it doesn't apply biggrin.gif

Anyways, Malaysia customs only want money, you can always dispute and that would mean delays and god knows what they will do to your unit during this time.

ok. I declared it as Arcade value...and I only send the empty console....Now a bit regret coz they actually want my friend to test it out and tell the symptoms.....

However, the console still in MY....

The process is a no brainer leh - they will ask you very standard questions.

1. Owners info - obviously must register under your friend's name in SG.
2. Console serial number
3. What the problem is - just describe that the unit flashes 3 red rings when you power on.
4. What is the color of the power brick when the console flashes 3 red rings, you have to say green
5. The wattage on your power brick, either 205 or 175 - so you gotta check

That's it. They will then give your friend a ref number and tell him to pick up a refurb unit in a week or so and turn in the bad unit on the day itself.
